Controversy

The jury is still out on the various mechanisms by which Light harvest complexes produce quenching sites. Although the violaxanthin-zeaxanthin cycle has been associated with the highly quenched state of LHC2 it is unclear what its exact role is.


xantofylls are not used to paint.

A source of xanthophyll

One of my first employments was protein analysis in a lab at a firm that supported area-wide farmers in various ways. There was also a refining plant on site; it processed drums of oleoresin imported from Africa that had been produced from plants such as chrysanthemums. The end product was pyrethrum but there were other compounds that came through the refinery, one of which was xanthophyll. During my time there, the refinery began a process to isolate and refine the xanthophyll for such things as supplements to enhance the yolks of eggs produced by chickens.
