X-Face specification

[edit]

Recently in 2024, someone reverse-engineered X-Face and made a specification for it to send to the IANA. Additionally, said individual's research and the specification points to an Emacs Lisp-written extension to X-Face on Japanese Linux that said individual had found references to on the Japanese version of this page. These include 8-bit grayscale, beyond-48x48, and animated RGB X-Faces, though testing of combining those indicates that all these features never got unified into a theoretically-possible 24bpp animated color X-Face more than just 48x48, except in now-archived plugins for the defunct Japanese e-mail client Datula though, if laid out in the right order, it IS possible to have an X-Face and Face header combination of ALL the 48x48px X-Face-el types (Datula too with clever sizing), which can be but currently isn't able to be displayed in a 96x96px cell. Beyond-48x48px is able to be more than just static monochrome, though it has to be done properly.
