Meaning of the idiom "the works"
[edit]Re: "request for all the toppings and condiments available", I have long believed that the idiom actually arose from the clockwork innards (i.e., "works") of a machine. (C.f. "to throw a wrench/spanner in the works".) Thus, in the context of X (clock, engine, hamburger, etc.) "the works" idiomatically means "everything necessary to make X an X". I'm backed up in this by Answers.com (totally unreliable, I know), which puts the origin in the 1800s. I guess my point is that restricting the idiom here to toppings and condiments isn't really correct. More generally, is there a good place on Wikipedia to explain the origin and meaning of idioms? We've got the list of idioms in the English language, I know, but that seems insufficient. Regards, Ryan McDaniel 16:16, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
