The terms of the report by William of Malmesbury are plausible, but a pre-650 abbot would probably have been British rather than Saxon, and the Oxford Book of English Placenames derives the hamlet name from Anglo-Saxon, though now much changed even from the Domesday version. This is not the place in which such a problem can be discussed, but editors might keep an eye open. Deipnosophista (talk) 19:20, 8 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
