Blackhawk Massacre 1832

The Battle of Bad Axe was the final, brutal engagement of the Black Hawk War of 1832 — less a battle than a massacre of a starving, retreating band trying to escape across the Mississippi River.

• • Background:** Black Hawk (Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak), a Sauk leader, had led roughly 1,000–1,500 Sauk, Meskwaki (Fox), and Kickapoo men, women, and children — known as the "British Band" — back across the Mississippi into Illinois in April 1832, disputing the validity of an 1804 land-cession treaty. What followed was months of pursuit by U.S. Army regulars and state militia (including a young Abraham Lincoln, who served but saw no combat) as the band, increasingly starved and exhausted, tried to retreat northwest toward the Mississippi.

• • The battle, August 1–2, 1832:** Near the mouth of the Bad Axe River in present-day Wisconsin, Black Hawk's band — reduced by then to around 500 people, many of them women, children, and the elderly — attempted to cross the Mississippi to safety. U.S. forces under General Henry Atkinson, along with the armed steamboat *Warrior*, caught them in the open. Black Hawk tried to signal surrender, but the *Warrior*'s crew opened fire. Troops then attacked the group directly; those who managed to swim or raft across the river were killed by Dakota (Sioux) warriors allied with the U.S. waiting on the far bank. At least 150 of Black Hawk's people were killed, many while trying to flee into the water; about 75 were taken captive; U.S./Dakota losses were around 5 killed and 19 wounded.

• • Aftermath:** Black Hawk himself escaped but surrendered later that month. He was imprisoned, then paraded through Eastern cities as a curiosity before being released to live under Keokuk, a rival Sauk leader who had cooperated with the U.S. The war's end accelerated Native removal from the Old Northwest and hardened U.S. Indian policy heading into the era of the Indian Removal Act.

• • On the August 3 dating specifically:** sources vary — Britannica places the core massacre on August 1–2, while Phil Konstantin's *This Day in North American Indian History* places the final pursuit and mop-up (including the *Warrior*'s last actions) on August 3. It's fair to describe August 1–3, 1832 as the span of the battle, with August 3 marking its tail end rather than its climax.
