So, what is it?

[edit]

After reading the article, I still can't answer the question "What is a Wildenstein Index Number?" Based on the name, I presume they are not alphabetic.

Are they integers beginning with 1 and continuing indefinitely? Are they also defined in terms of a book or artist? Are they something like the Dewey decimal system (958.26) or the LC cataloguing system (ND2402.6) ? I want to know the format. Are there other systems for cataloguing art?
