An anonymous editor added information suggesting that people have been known to cut off extremities which have been stung to relieve pain - quite frankly I find this ludicrous. I live in a popular tourist resort on the coast of Cornwall and have personally observed the results of weever stings and though nasty they are not *that* bad. But, I thought it should be left in since it is useful to debunk this sort of fallacy in an article. Trewornan 06:26, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
From many fishermen I've met that have been stung describe it as the worse pain ever felt (even one who's hand has been severed by dynamite fishing). One or two of them also mentioned that the lesser weever's sting is more painful than the greater's.--92.118.191.48 (talk) 10:48, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
The wording does seem very strong about how much it hurts. It seems a bit strange the part where it says people "find the comparison to bee and wasp stings offensive". Maybe they do, but it's hardly relevant. I assume the severity of the sting varies, I have been stung, and it was painful but hardly the worst pain I've ever felt (bearing in mind that many more people have died of bee and wasp stings...) and other part claims that lifeguards are stung daily - seems unlikely they would be willing to feel the worst pain they'd ever felt, daily. Also, I think the part about hot water denaturing the protein is very unlikely, bearing in mind it would have to heat up the tissue and not affect any other proteins... 131.111.186.95 (talk) 11:31, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
- I added the part about lifeguards but when I said they "deal with stings" on a daily basis I didn't intend to suggest that they get stung themselves that often. In any case I've removed it.Trewornan (talk) 03:02, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
