Waterview Connection Open day
[edit]If anyone is interested, there's an open day on 13 Oct 2013. The walk is free but you need to book yourself for a slot in the tour. Booking Page. Linnah (talk) 03:48, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
This will complete the Western Ring Route - really?
[edit]In the article is: "The link will be the last section of SH20, and will complete the Western Ring Route."
This is not true, am I right? What about the piece connecting the easternmost end of the SH18 motorway with SH1, which is currently a regular road with traffic lights? I thought the Western Ring Route was not complete until it was motorway the whole way. Nzseries1 (talk) 21:47, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
- I've removed this as I don't believe it's true. I'm happy to have it put back with references if I'm wrong. Nzseries1 (talk) 02:47, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
- If you ask a question during the morning (NZ time), you really should wait much more than 5 hours for an answer. Some folks work and can't access Wikipedia during the day. I spotted your question just before heading out for lunch and an afternoon's outing and didn't get home till 5.00. Akld guy (talk) 05:38, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
- I did a bit of investigation during those five hours to further confirm what I thought, figuring that if there was anything that I missed people could add it back. Nzseries1 (talk) 02:31, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
- The link will in fact complete the Western Ring Route, as stated in the reference attached to that paragraph. Akld guy (talk) 00:17, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

- The Waterview connection WILL complete the Western Ring Route, just because it will still not be all motorway does not make it incomplete. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 03:06, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
Converting from 'Future infrastructure' article/infobox
[edit]Now that the Waterview Connection is open, this article needs to be updated to suit. I guess the 'Future Infrastructure' Infobox should be replaced with a 'tunnel' infobox. With the peripheral updates just described in the article.
Would it also make sense for this article to just be about the tunnel, with the overall 'Waterview Connection' project a sub-section/history? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RadishSlice (talk • contribs) 00:16, 4 July 2017 (UTC)
Potential merge from/into Waterview Tunnel
[edit]I've removed the {{mergingfrom}} template from the article, as the AfD was closed with no consensus. I'm not proposing opening an RfC yet, as I think it's me and Traumnovelle's (very soft) disagreement that made it no consensus.
My AfD comment was: "Support merge but in the reverse direction: Tunnel into Connection. The tunnel is a subset of the motorway stretch, so I think the most logical structure is to have the articles mirror reality". I still somewhat feel that, on reflection, but I see Traumnovelle's point. I think if the Tunnel article takes in information from the Connection article, it risks becoming an article on the Connection itself, which lands us where we are right now. MrSeabody (talk) 23:58, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- Similar articles i.e. Upper Harbour Bridge, Newmarket Viaduct, and Auckland Harbour Bridge all involved more than the actual bridge and viaduct when constructed. All these projects predate the internet so it is a bit hard to find what sources at the time described them as. I think its more logical to focus on the tunnel and cover some of the upgrades part of it there, with others covered at SH20/SH16.
- If you do a Google News search and limit to the year you get only one positive result for connection versus nine for tunnel. Even when events take place on what is the Waterview Connection reports use the tunnel to locate it
- This all suggests (as well as my own personal experience) that people are familiar with the tunnel but less so with the 'connection', likely because one is a much more visible and noticeable piece of infrastructure, where as you would need a map to discern where the connection begins. Traumnovelle (talk) 02:32, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- I agree with MrSeabody that the broader article scope should be the one used. All of the Waterview Tunnel is within the Waterview Connection, but the reverse isn't true. If we're having the article cover the whole thing then calling it the tunnel is inaccurate. Turnagra (talk) 19:54, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
