Does Waluigi REALLY need his own article?

[edit]

He just really doesn't seem... "major" enough to me. As much as I personally like the character (I get the joke - he's meant to suck), he's only ever appeared in spin-offs... and that's all. There's really not much important to say about him - the article is dominated by the "Reception" section which is basically just whining about how people don't like him as a character. I think he should just be limited to the List of Mario series characters page.

Otherwise, I argue... why shouldn't Princess Daisy have her own page? She's no more important or interesting than Waluigi. One might argue that she's moreso, since she actually appeared in a canon game (Super Mario Land), and was "important" enough to warrant a "baby" character in Mario Kart Wii.

I love Waluigi, and I'd love to see the article stay. But truth is, the article is mainly talking about how much he sucks, and I just don't think there's much to say about him. Anyone got an opinion on this? - Arran64 (talk), 11:16, 09 April 2012 (GMT).

Though I guess if Lakitu gets an article... -.- — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arran64 (talkcontribs) 13:46, 11 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
He does, as he has significant coverage in third party sources and is notable by Wikipedia guidelines. Daisy, on the other hand, does not have much third party sources, and although she may be more notable in real-life, does not deserve a page on Wikipedia. Oh, and one more thing - please put your section at the bottom of the talk page rather than at the top. Androids101 | Visit me! | talk | contribs 01:14, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hey Arran64, remember when you said " I love Waluigi, and I'd love to see the article stay"? I love Waluigi too! And that's because he is funny and if he is taken out of games it will break my heart. But your right, most of it just says how much he isn't appreciated. And he doesn't need his o w n article. That's just wrong. He is n o t a main character. I would normally have said " of course he deserves his own article you dinguses" but having read your points, I am now torn. This is tough..... I'm going to say he does. He may only appear in spinoffs, but he is still a core Mario character and that's that. MarioFyreFlower (talk) 18:59, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

As long as a video game character has received enough attention, whether its about the development process, impact in the culture, or in this case how nobody likes him, it is deemed notable enough to have its own article. See WP:GNG and WP:WEIGHT for more details. You can also see info here. Panini🥪 13:47, 18 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Uhh...new voice actor???

[edit]

Someone posted here, as well as at Wario, that, apparently, Mike Judge has taken over the role as voice actor for Waluigi...is this true? Because I googled it and found squat... Black Yoshi (talk) 20:50, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

"fictional"?

[edit]

In the article, the word fictional is inside double quotes... I'm pretty sure Waluigi doesn't exist. Is there a specific reason for the quotes? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.73.0.154 (talk) 08:27, 2 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

WAAAAAAArio? He never invited me. WAAA

[edit]

I saw at the bottom of the page there was a Wario series thing. Waluigi was never in a Wario game (that wasn't customizable).

In Waluigi's words:

"WAAAAAAAAAAAA! Wario never invites me on his adventures. I think his series would be better if it had a 2-player mode. WAAAAA" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.228.226.153 (talk) 01:44, 15 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Changes

[edit]

Since nowadays Waluigi has a much more positive reception ( and some of the sites in reception are jokes ) i have added more content to the article by adding more characteristics and including positives articles, so it´s even the amount of articles that hate him, and those who love. I did this because i did not wish for the reception entry to be longer. If i added the positive articles i intended it would be huge, so i added those and cut a few negative ones. I wish for the page to remain that way

waluigi's last name.

in Mario kart tour Waluigi in his bus driver outfit is wearing the Scottish tartan for the Stewart clan leading me to believe that Waluigi's full name is Waluigi Stewart as in Scotland the tartan you wear is based on your last name. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/808836964773789716/811670965712191578/unknown.png here's a link to a photo comparing the tartan to waluigi.  Preceding unsigned comment added by Floper69 (talkcontribs) 18:51, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Greek letter

[edit]

Please describe that the logo of waluigi depicts a Greek letter in more detail of Gamma where it says “The symbol "Γ" on Waluigi's hat and gloves is used to represent him in many games”

Just click on the letter itself, it will take you to the page on the letter gamma. Black Yoshi (Yoshi! | Yoshi's Eggs) 02:50, 9 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

It’s not that clear it needs an adjective such as the “Greek letter”. Only clicking on the link will give you the information. We should say it’s equivalent to the Greek letter. We should mention it on the article.

Thing is, yes, it technically is the Greek letter gamma, but that's not the way it was intended. In the same way that Wario's W is Mario's M flipped vertically, Waluigi's Γ is Luigi's L flipped horizontally. That, and the letter is described as a "symbol" already, so describing it explicitly as a Greek letter isn't necessary. Black Yoshi (Yoshi! | Yoshi's Eggs) 23:29, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Don’t think that TikTok is a good citation in all honesty

[edit]

Hate to be a buzzkill about this @Miguelsxvi and @TheOE07, but I really doubt that Etymologynerd’s TikTok is a good citation. Partly because of WP:VIDEOREF and WP:SPSSELF, but also because the TikTok in question only puts forward as a hypothetical that this could be the IPA spelling, and not that it is for definite.

I think what would be better is if the sentence was just “He makes the sound ‘waaa!’” Or something to that effect, but I wanted to check here. Again, don’t want to be annoying about this, just felt I should say. Slamforeman (talk) 22:30, 17 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Ats didn’t go through whoops. @Miguelsxvi and @TheOE07. Slamforeman (talk) 22:45, 17 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Slamforeman I understand your point and agree that the sentence should at least be phrased differently. While I dispute the general notion that TikTok isn't a valid source, specially when it comes to specialized accounts, I accept the criticism. I made the edit in a rush and should've known better. I feel that you were trying to be nice about it, but in all honesty, do you think that the sound should be included or would you delete the whole thing? I will go along with your call. Miguelsxvi (talk) 08:37, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
I thought about it and realized it doesn’t really matter all that much. It doesn’t impede anyone’s understanding, so I think it fine. I feel it best to keep it for now and if someone else has a good reason to get rid of it then c'est la vie. Thanks for understanding where I was coming from though. Best wishes. Overall: @Fieryninja: Promoted to GA on 2/5, and spot checking sources shows no issues. That being said, the GA review is improper (The lead is a bit short, broadness isn't met) This appears to have been a rubber stamped review and a discussion on User talk:Begocc and Wikipedia talk:Good article nominations shows that the GA status is likely to be revoked since it was done improperly.

At this time, the GA reviewer has requested that the review by voided and added back to the queue. This disqualifies this DYK since it no longer meets eligibility requirements. Once this is properly elevated to GA status, then it can be renominated for DYK. 🏵️Etrius ( Us) 01:44, 7 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

    Infobox and lede

    [edit]
    • I would remove the final sentence of the first paragraph: the information about him being Wario's tennis partner and sidekick can be moved to the next paragraph, since it's more about his first appearance than a general statement, while the second half of the sentence is redundant.
    • Add a sentence about his most noticeable features (tall and lanky, purple, upside-down L) to the lede.

    Concept and creation

    [edit]
    • Absolutely perfect photo choice in this section.
    • The second paragraph should be moved later in this section, probably before the last paragraph.
    • Waluigi's appearance was designed...: This sentence should be split in two
    • Address the "better source needed" tag

    Characteristics

    [edit]
    • Consider moving this above the "concept and creation" section
    • (gamma)(an upside-down "L")
    • evil-looking is subjective - stick to neutral descriptors unless quoting a source.
    • His original role was to be the tennis partner of Wario, but their relationship is ambiguous.: move this to the middle of the next paragraph
    • In various Mario sports games...: split this sentence in two

    Appearances

    [edit]
    • Clarify that he did not appear in any 2023 games
    • After Mario Party 3, he returned as a playable character in every subsequent game in the Mario Party series,: remove the comma after series and move citation to the end of the sentence.
    • Make sure that the verb tense matches - some are in past tense here, others in present tense.
    • No need to mention the shutdown date for Dr. Mario World

    Reception

    [edit]
    • The lede mentions Waluigi being an internet meme, but that's not discussed in this section.
    • I'd add a wiktionary link to wikt:colorway, since that's not a terribly common term.

Done I think all of the above are fixed, but let me know if I have missed anything. Thanks for reviewing. Fieryninja (talk) 12:57, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

In the section about his characteristics, I'd like to have the transription of his catchphrase "Waaah!" in IPA, /wæ̃̂ːː/, inserted into the article.

    So, it'd be transforming this:
    "Waaah!"[1]
    into:
    "Waaah!"[1] (pronounced /wæ̃̂ːː/)[2]IмSтevan talk 05:00, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Seems unnecessary, also YouTube is not a reliable source. But I'll leave this open for other input Aston305 (talk) 12:56, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I agree with this unfortunately. (I also like etymology guy much, and would not doubt his transcription, but this does not pass the bar for reliability I fear.)
That said, I think a pronunciation (guide) and/or IPA transcription does actually add a lot of value in my opinion, and as the Etymologyguy says, "waaah" does not quite cover the sound. I will also note that the first source is also a youtube video.
I actually have a question: the lede includes both an IPA transcription for Waluigi's name and a recording for the pronunciation. I do not see how either of these are sourced.
If this is allowed, I think we might be able to do the same: add a recording of this sound, which I think we definitely should have either way, and which would be much easier to attribute/reference, and add an IPA transcription of this. Ideally, I'd like the transcription to be verifiable, (the ideal situation would be an interview where someone like etymologyguy discusses (t)his assumed transcription with the voice actor for waluigi or someone related to this at Nintendo) but as I said: maybe it doesn't strictly need to be?
At least I think we should do the recording bit. (as long as there are no copyvio issues there).

afaik Nintendo isn't too generous when it comes to copyright violations.. Aston305 (talk) 14:42, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Looking at the reliable sources page I'm not seeing anything against Youtube videos that would bar them from being used as sources. There is WP:USERGENERATED, I think Ethymology Nerd passes the bar when it comes to things such as how a word is pronounced — IмSтevan talk 14:53, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia:NOYT exists. If this was a video where he talks to someone from nintendo, it would be obviously fine or if it was a self-published statement by nintendo/character creator. Slomo666 (talk) 14:57, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
WP:NOYT states that "reliability depends on who posted the video", and this is a Harvard graduate linguist — IмSтevan talk 22:15, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
The issue isn't his qualifications as a linguist, but his qualifications to tak about Waluigi specifically. Unless he specifically researced Waluigi, he's just a guy who is highly skilled who got asked to turn a second audio clip into IPA. (And probably did spend a considerable amount of time making sure he got it right, but that is beside the point: Wah is not exactly a common phrase, so I'd be very surprised if the "correct" pronunciation is taught at harvard or available in academic papers whatsoever.)Slomo666 (talk) 22:46, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
This is larger than Waluigi, he is a linguist and he turned an audio into IPA, which is within the scope of his expertese — IмSтevan talk 23:12, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
It is really not? (larger than waluigi)
If I am writing a paper on, say, the electrical conductivity of a new alloy, and someone asks a professor of material sciences specialised in electronics halfway around the world who has never spoken to me about this material's electr(on)ic properties, his short general answer upon being questioned would not be reliable, but my paper would be, despite me having a lesser title in academia. I am sure Adam would agree with what I'm saying here.
Again: I don't doubt his personal qualifications and expertise. The issue is verifiabilty. A YT video isn't exactly an academic paper. (much less a peer-reviewed one, but that's a bit much in my opinion)
I would be much more inclined to support using a video if it also cited sources. (As some videos on the scientific side of youtube do, and some of my profs are now doing this, which I think is quite cool.)
    Slomo666 (talk) 00:00, 17 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
If that professor had access to the alloy, yes, their answer would be more reliable. And it really is larger than Waluigi, as you can transcribe this sound without knowing it's related to Waluigi. Waluigi plays no role in how the sound... sounds — IмSтevan talk 00:41, 17 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have a question tho. Would it break copyright if we used Ethymology Nerd's waaah with his permission? — IмSтevan talk 14:55, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission states he would have to agree that anyone can use the work he's giving permission for (because anyone can take content from wikipedia afaik). So not just Wikipedia.
I am not sure though if the voice actor/nintendo (whoever owns that copyright) has a copyright on the "waaah!", but I do think it is pretty critical that an original recording is used and not a user-generated one. Okay but even with that, I was not able to edit via mobile. I'm now on desktop and there seems to be no issue whatsoever. Weird — IмSтevan talk 14:42, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I've found sometimes that if the network you're on is blocked, you may be prevented from editing even when logged in. IIRC I frequently have to turn off my VPN when I go to edit or else I get blocked. Aston305 (talk) 14:49, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think the issue is that I was logged out, tried editing it, realised, logged in and just sent the request without trying again. My bad — IмSтevan talk 14:54, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
