During the winter of 1913 Alfred Whitten abandon his family, wife Lucy and children Blanche, Virgil, and Lee, to return to Batchtown, Ill. Lucy kept her family in a tent until the snows forced her family to take refuge within the train station. They spent the rest of the time in station until they moved to Fallon. It was Virgil's 'job' to climb the train cars that carried coal to throw some coal off. Then he would collect the coal on his walk back to the station. The coal was used for heating and cooking as the station wasn't intended for a family stay.
