WLYX etc

I remember WLYX at Southwestern. The school also operated WSWM (for Southwestern at Memphis), which license was evidently transferred to the U of M, according to the FCC website. My point is, the website does not indicate that WLYX is a previous call sign for WYPL. What indication/evidence is there that YPL has ANY relation to LYX? I will leave this message here for awhile, and if there is no other input in a few months, I intend to remove any reference to WLYX. The FCC interactive site seems not to respond with info on some defunct stations. I have no problem leaving the info IN, if there is any support for it.

Also, WYPL has for several years featured Memphis-originated and Memphis-related music at night. Many recordings are donated by the artists themselves, which is not only cool in itself (Jerry Lee Lewis recently brought in his latest), but helps immensely with the limited budget of a nonprofit independent station. As Memphis is unique in its history, and recognized worldwide for its music, this would seem notable. Rags (talk) 10:07, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

2008 Award

I have removed the paragraph describing the award. In rereading the Comm-Appeal coverage, it is clear that the award was given to the library, and not to or for the radio station. The director of the library, in accepting the award, takes the opportunity to plug the radio station in her remarks. There is nothing wrong with the plug per se, but the award is more properly described on the library's page, if at all. I described the library as "award-winning" in the first paragraph, in order to retain the info/ref, but I wouldn't be surprised or dismayed if it is later deleted by another editor. History

Steve Terry started the first radio station in 1980 for Memphis Shelby County Public Library System it later transitioned to WYPL. He was the general station manager of WYPL until he retired in 2005. ~2026-98224-6 (talk) 16:48, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
