Also New York City had the elasta mount of UHF awareness of any market in the US. The reason was that NEw York City had 6 commercial VHF stations that had all the viable programming plus the Educational station was also on VHF. Very few New York Metro area people even knew there was UHF. Even Los Angeles with 7 commercial VHF stations had ana wareness of UHF due to the fact the PBS station is a UHF. In many markets even network affiliates were UHF stations. So to get a decent selection of programming in most places one needed to turn to UHF if they did not have cable. But Wometco did buy a few shows for WTVG 68.

Um, of *any* market in the US? That would include Glendive, Montana (pop 7000), the smallest market with its *one* TV station? They wouldn't need UHF.

KXGN / Ch 5 CBS, NBC 210 S Douglas Glendive, MT 35801 +1-406-377-3377

As for few people knowing there was UHF? FCC regulations required all new television sets to be able to tune UHF as of 1969 with similar tuning mechanisms on both bands by 1973, so some would certainly have the new sets with their (nominal) 82 channels of TV tuner capacity. --carlb 17:53, 25 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Keep in mind that those early TVs with UHF tuners built in had a separate UHF channel selector. You had to turn the VHF knob to "U", and then tune the UHF knob to the channel you wanted. Plus, those TV generally had a separate antenna feed for UHF. So with six commercial and one non-commercial channel already on VHF, most New Yorkers didn't bother learning about UHF, even if they had a TV capable of receiving it. UHF didn't really become successful in New York until it was put to a use not available on the VHF dial...Spanish language programming. Jimtrue (talk) 00:23, 27 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
At the time of WFUT's first air date on September 29, 1974 (as WBTB), New York City did indeed have six commercial VHF stations and one non-commercial educational station, channel 13, However, it may be noted for the record that from its first air date on May 15, 1948 until its final air date on December 22, 1961, Channel 13 was a commercial station. It returned to the air on September 16, 1962, rebranded as an affiliate of National Educational Television and Radio Center (NETRC), subsequently National Educational Television (NET) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

U68 music format

[edit]

Why is there no mention of Channel 68's brief stint as an over-the-air broadcast music television station? Branded as U68. I would think it is significant considering that station manager Bill Roller did on-air interviews with such music notables as Frank Zappa. Macross-island (talk) 16:02, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Never mind, I see that it was included, Question withdrawn. my bad. Macross-island (talk) 20:10, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Note: @DaniloDaysOfOurLives and I are working very hard to review every single GA nomination in the television section. Consider joining us to clear the backlog!

Shall review :) IAWW (talk) 19:37, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

This is an excellent idea (this is the main of the two as it has the material that is LST'd out). I am out of town or else I'd be joining a bit more promptly. And I must say you are right that this is making GA move even quicker. I am down to the lowest number of pending articles I've had in some time, almost to the point where I want to send up my next 20 pages for review. @Sammi Brie Comments are below. Always nice to give your work the attention it deserves. By all means join us when you're back in town. I find it good fun working with other editors to achieve something! IAWW (talk) 23:26, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
@It is a wonderful world I should have resolved all the comments. Thank you for doing 68 first because some of this goes into 67 as well by LST. There is no sourcing on why advertisers were "hostile", but the rest was fixable. I'll do monetary conversions some other time. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 05:26, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for being so quick. I am happy with all your changes, except point I replied to below. IAWW (talk) 11:59, 19 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Lead

[edit]

after just 90 days: "Just" implies it was a short amount of time, which is an opinion

The station was notable as: "notable" is an opinion in this context

WBTB-TV became the first station in the U.S. at that time: "at that time" is quite vague. What precisely do you mean here?

STV system: I guess "STV" means subscription TV? this term needs an explanation.

due to rising cable penetration: Seems quite technical to me. I suggest linking "penetration" to Market penetration or adding "in the market"

I think the lead should explain when the station received its current call letters, WFUT-DT.

Prehistory

[edit]

amended its application to specify a tower in West Orange, New Jersey: Was this in addition to broadcasting off the Empire State Building, or as a replacement for broadcasting off the Empire State Building?

Suggest linking "call letters"

WBTB-TV: Blonder-Tongue ownership

[edit]

Can "because of a faltering stock market" be linked to "1973–1975 recession"?

Is there any sourcing on why the local businesses campaigned against the station?

Launch of Wometco Home Theater

[edit]

As 1977 turned to 1978: Strikes me as quite a journalistic rather than encyclopaedic tone

noted that children were more likely to turn to a UHF station than their parents:

  • "Noted" implies this is a fact, but it is stated by the general manager of the station in the source, so I think it is best treated as an opinion to be attributed given his COI.
  • I originally read this as the children being more likely to turn to the TV than to their parents for entertainment. Could you reword it slightly to prevent this possible misreading?

this strategy gave WTVG its first rating point in the late afternoons when it aired the shows: Is a bit stronger than the source which says "that approach seems to have worked".

  • Did you read the very next sentence on A-6? Earlier this year, Wometco commissioned an Arbitron survey of the late afternoon audience. The results gave a rating of "one," which represents the first time WTVG has been able to garner any positive number in the ratings.
Sorry I should have been more specific. I was referring to the causal connection between the strategy and WTVG getting its first rating point. In the source, the causal connection is worded as "seems to have worked", which isn't as strong as "this strategy gave WTVG".
@It is a wonderful world: Reworded to break this causal link. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 16:04, 19 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Channel 68 adds 67

[edit]

June after returning to the air from a fire: Was this fire what stopped the station broadcasting 4 years ago, or a more recent fire?

  • The WFTY article covers this in more detail. The answer is that it was a recent fire (January 30 to June 2, 1980).

KKR buyout of Wometco

[edit]

Meanwhile, KKR contemplated reformatting: If they had discontinued ad supported broadcasting, and had now sold WHT, what were the actually broadcasting during this time?

U68

[edit]

As a music video station and not merely a program, it was subject to the six-month exclusivity that MTV demanded from some labels for new titles: I don't quite understand this. How was U68 subject to this contract with MTV?

  • MTV demanded exclusivity from the record labels. Essentially, if you were an artist coming out with a new video, MTV insisted on being the only TV channels allowed to air it for a time. This did not apply if, say, it concerned an hour- or two-hour-long program. Roxy Myzal of Boston's V66, which feels the full effect of MTV's six-month windows because it broadcasts 24 hours a day, insisted the labels are "shooting themselves in the foot with exclusivity." ... Similar arguments were offered by Steve Leeds, p.d. of Gotham's. local musicvid station, U68. He said the exclusivity pacts were "an economic decision made before we came onto the scene." He reported that label video promotion departments resent having six-month windows "jammed down their throats" and sympathize with the local outlets.
Thanks for explaining

As late as 2000, Diller promised to bring the CityVision general-entertainment independent format that USA Broadcasting was slowly rolling out in its portfolio to New York and Los Angeles. CityVision had made it to four cities, but it proved costly to operate and was a ratings disappointment outside of live sports: Unsourced
