Adding unreferenced entries of former employees to lists containing BLP material

Hello, Please do not add unreferenced names as entries to the list of former employees in articles. Including this type of material in articles does not abide by current consensus and its inclusion is strongly discouraged in our policies and guidelines. The rationales are as follows:

1. WP:NOT tells us, Wikipedia is "not an indiscriminate collection of information." As that section describes, just because something is true, doesn't necessarily mean the info belongs in Wikipedia.
2. As per WP:V, we cannot include information in Wikipedia that is not verifiable and sourced.
3. WP:NLIST tells us that lists included within articles (including people's names) are subject to the same need for references as any other information in the article.
4. Per WP:BLP, we have to be especially careful about including un-sourced info about living persons.

If you look at articles about companies in general, you will not find mention of previous employees, except in those cases where the employee was particularly notable. Even then, the information is not presented just as a list of names, but is incorporated into the text itself (for example, when a company's article talks about the policies a previous CEO had, or when they mention the discovery/invention of a former engineer/researcher). If a preexisting article is already in the encyclopedia for the person you want to add to a list, it's generally regarded as sufficient to support their inclusion in list material in another article. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 01:49, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Market

Why are there unnecessary communities listed in the market location name "Allentown-Bethleham-Easton-Philadelphia" instead of just "Allentown-Philadelphia" or just "Allentown"? These individual communities don't seem to be involved in WFMZ-TV, and the DMA is just part of the Philadelphia market. Chuterix (talk) 16:35, 1 July 2025 (UTC)

The same goes for others like WTVX where Vero Beach is included although Vero Beach is part of the Fort Pierce market and does not contribute to the workings of the station. Chuterix (talk) 16:38, 1 July 2025 (UTC)

Such stuff is unnecessary unless it was mentioned in a legal ID, but I don't know if recordings are even reliable sources (they're primary sources anyway), which leads to stuff like "Palm Beaches" included in the WPBT article. Chuterix (talk) 16:41, 1 July 2025 (UTC)

So, Infobox television station works differently from Infobox radio station, and arguably I wish it worked like the latter, where the COL was at the top and the area or market served was in the first line. However, when I harmonized these infoboxes in 2020, it was impossible to harmonize the way they'd been used.

I suspect here the additional cities came from the Allentown–Bethlehem–Easton, PA–NJ MSA. It would likely make much more sense to consider what should go in these fields.

Without having to edit every article that uses this infobox, 3,200 pages in total, here's what I'd do:

• For WFMZ, I'd list Allentown–Philadelphia. The main city in a market should be up here if we're not going to go through 3,000-plus pages.
• WTVX probably should be Fort Pierce–West Palm Beach now. When it was a full-service news-producing station in the 1980s, it did have a facility in Stuart as well. But that's not relevant.
• WPBT is an odd case and one where I'd actually tread with caution for two reasons:
  • It had substantial membership in the Palm Beaches area, even while WXEL was still an independent public TV station. In fact, WPBT had more members there alone than WXEL did altogether.
  • It consumed WXEL a decade ago.

Here are some other principles:

• The "main city" should usually be the first one listed by Nielsen in its DMA name.
  • There are some cases where a "main city" designation would not be very representative, though. If I were doing KFVS, I'd only list Cape Girardeau.
  • Exception: If the main city is not covered by the transmitter, which can happen in a large DMA. KFPH-DT, KNWA-TV (Fayetteville before Fort Smith), KMYU (needs changing)
  • In some cases, this is not appropriate for public TV stations where state lines come into play. WSRE really shouldn't have Mobile up top.
• I've said this before, but two countries do not belong together in this field.

Revisiting, I feel like a way to do this is to experimentally add every of the station's city of license into |city=. This means entries like WCBS-TV would temporarily have |city=[[New York, New York]] while |location=New York, New York. Or just have prebuilt |area= templates for every television station article (e.g. |area=[[Treasure Coast]], [[Palm Beach County]]) for stations like WPTV, WPEC, etc. I'll create experimental entry on my own page in a moment.
