@Sammi Brie: The original hook is fine. I'm aware that hooks "that focus unduly on negative aspects of living individuals ... should be avoided", and think a version of ALT1 would be acceptable. For ALT1, is there a reason to use "politicians" rather than a more direct equivalent of, or the actual phrase, "state legislators"? I also think there are better ways to phrase ALT1, but if you're happy to stick with the original hook then no need to worry about that. "Regards, BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 15:06, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- @BennyOnTheLoose: "State representative" would be fine instead of "politician" for ALT1. What are your thoughts in re: phrasing? Sammi Brie (she/her • t • c) 16:51, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- The use of both "parents" and "children" seems a bit complicated. I had in mind something along the lines "...that two state legislators got into a fight in the parking lot of Radio Mambí in Miami after the father of one politician insulted the other's father on the station?" but now I've written it down I'm not sure it's really an improvement. BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 21:55, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- @BennyOnTheLoose: Yeah, that's kind of wordy. Maybe... Sammi Brie (she/her • t • c) 23:15, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- ALT1a: ... that two state representatives got into a fight in the parking lot of Miami's Radio Mambí after one's father insulted the other's on the air? Source: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/103795124/2-state-reps-duke-it-out-in-radio/
- Yes, I think so. Happy with the original hook and with ALT1a, with a slight preference for the latter. Thanks, Sammi Brie. BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 08:48, 7 July 2022 (UTC)

Lead
[edit]-Why is the amount of watts in the lead relevant? Mostly asking since I'm not super duper familiar with this.
- Power is very meaningful, especially in AM radio. 50,000 watts is the maximum for a U.S. AM radio station.
-"The history of today's WAQI" feels like it could become dated given it's saying "today". I feel you could just axe the today part.
-"It was acquired by George B. Storer in 1944 after a controversial acquisition that resulted in government scrutiny, moving to Miami the next year." reword since it implies the government scrutiny moved to Miami the following year.
-"It generally aired an adult music format after the 1950s." This is a bit unclear to me. Was it primarily airing adult music, or was it using adult music as part of a different format? Reword if possible.
- When we use "format", it means generally the entire broadcast day.
WFTL in Fort Lauderdale
[edit]-Looks good
WGBS
[edit]-"as WGBS-FM" was the simulcast called this, or was this the station name? It is unclear.
- Reworded. (Fun fact, that article is a DYK of mine)
-"beautiful music/middle of the road" Reword per MOS:SLASH.
WAQI
[edit]-"when the call letters WGBS disappeared from Miami radio after 40 years to make way for WAQI." This bit feels a bit overly dramatic to me, and feels like it's trying to illicit emotion. I'd remove it.
-"Whereas Jefferson-Pilot, competing for English-language listeners, wanted a signal with better Broward coverage, Mambisa got a bonus of import to its work: one of the best Miami signals into Cuba." This whole sentence feels very confusing to me. Not sure it's really needed when it can just be summed up as "They wanted a strong radio signal".
-Could it be clarified what a physical plant is? It hasn't been clarified prior barring a name drop, and I'm unsure of why it's so important.
-"This fact was not lost on the Cuban government." The following sentence does not indicate Cuba actually did anything about it, so I'm not sure why it's here.
- Reworded.
-"The irony was that the main interference generated was not within Cuba, where station officials claimed to have a large audience, but in Florida, where high-power Radio Rebelde and WQBA signals clashed." Whose irony? This feels very opionated and if its cited to a source cite it to them instead of having it in your own words.
- Reworded to attribute Pérez Roura.
-"Cuba's exile community, close to the families of political prisoners and organized opposition movements while offering community service and cultural programming." I'd split this, it feels like it's jamming too many points into one sentence.
- Split
-"In 2000, Republican politicians Renier Díaz de la Portilla and Carlos Lacasa engaged in an early-morning fistfight in the station's parking lot after Lacasa's father insulted Díaz de la Portilla's father on the air. Lacasa received a bloody nose, and when host Martha Flores asked on the air for someone to call the police, the city's 911 system was swamped with calls." This whole bit doesn't seem too relevant and just feels like WP:TRIVIA since it doesn't really impact anything else and feels tangential.
- This was actually the DYK hook when it ran in 2022. I think it's relevant because it shows the real impact Mambi had—and has—in this community.
- The way it's phrased right now makes it seem as though the location of the brawl is the only association it has with the station. I feel it could be re-worded to emphasize the connection. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 21:12, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
Spotcheck
[edit]Sources checked: 57, 58, 99, 43, 40, 35, 24, 20, 90, 69. I'm admittedly unsure if we really need 99 given it's a PRIMARY citation, and it's unclear if DeSantis's advertising had an actual impact or not.
- [99] contains the ad copy and translations for the quote.
- Could you clarify? I'm a bit confused, though I'm admittedly just a bit tired rn. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 21:12, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Pokelego999: I quote the ad, and the release provides translations for the Spanish-language material, so I'd rather that stay. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 22:46, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Sammi Brie I'm confused what ad you're talking about, since the citation is a contract. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:26, 11 August 2025 (UTC)
- Oh I see, I have the wrong citation in my head, @Pokelego999. It is used to confirm that that advertising aired on WAQI's air. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 00:32, 11 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Sammi Brie the source in the next sentence already confirms they aired on WAQI though, doesn't it? Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 00:47, 11 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Pokelego999 Took a look with fresh eyes and decided to drop the monetary amount. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 09:03, 11 August 2025 (UTC)
