Division between human and non-human vulvas

I suggest the article to be divided in two articles, one concerning vulvas in humans and another vulvas in general. Although this page starts with "vulvas are mammalian sexual organs", it then drifts out to talk only about human vulvas.

I suspect most people who access this article are interested in reading about human vulvas, so it would be better to split it into two articles rather than reformulating this article to be a general overview on vulvas in the animal kingdom. While it didn't reach consensus, a majority of the people on discussion you linked was clearly in favor of splitting the article up anyway. The main issue seemed that there was not enough content to make a separate article. Even a simple sticky on top of the discussion page of "we will split those two articles when there is enough content for a split, please contribute to the 'Other animals' section" would go a long way to gather enough small contributions over time to justify a split.

Anyway, I wouldn't be able to contribute much because I don't know that much about zoology or medicine. My area of interest, and the reason I advocate for a split, is gender studies. It's very inadequate for nowadays' standards that an article on vagina or vulvas describes only women as having either, and it goes both ways for the penis article. Things get more complex in that trans women may have a vulva but not a vagina after a vaginoplasty, etc.

Splitting the articles between humans and other animals and then figuring out how to write the human-centered articles is just less of a headache than try to figure out how to respectfully address those differences. It is already hard enough to figure out how to word everything when comparing cis and trans/intersex people, see the discussion page for Woman for an example, much less figure out how to write those differences respectfully when you put animals in the mix, who are still described with the "female" and "male" denominators but have no concept of gender whatsoever. I believe there is a grammatical error or maybe just a confusing sentence in the Structure -> Vestibule subsection. The first sentence currently reads:

"The area between the labia minora where the vaginal introitus and the urinary meatus ... are located is the vestibule."

The phrase “between the labia minora where…” is difficult to parse because “between” seems to require a second object, which it does not have. I'm not sure what the original author intended, perhaps it was "within" since the labia minora are a circular structure. (i.e. "the area within the labia minora surrounding the ...")

This sentence is already quite busy, so I think adding a simple "and" after "labia minora" would be an improvement but not a great overall solution. I think the sentence should be rewritten. Whatever the solution, I just wanted to point it out. ~2026-30233-15 (talk) 17:13, 19 May 2026 (UTC)

The Depiction of a Human Vulva

I think we shouldn’t be depicting human vulva’s, as this site is exposed to children and no sex organ should be viewed by a child. Another article about male functions is used with an animal reproductive organ. I suggest the same is done to keep children safe. ~2026-33942-13 (talk) 19:53, 8 June 2026 (UTC)

Infobox caption change?

Since the article is about the vulva in all mammals, not only humans (but primarily about humans), should the infobox caption be changed to mention "in humans"? As in...

Natural variation in vulvar appearance -> Natural variation in vulvar appearance in humans
