"A voltage regulator module is an electronic device that provides a regulated output voltage from an unstable or fluctuating input voltage. Voltage regulation is a key function in most electronic power supplies.

The simplest voltage regulators are used to stabilize a DC voltage to a fixed value. These can consist of only one component, perhaps augmented by a few capacitors for stability. In low-voltage electronics, the 78xx and 79xx IC series are very popular regulators for positive and negative voltages respectively. They are available for many fixed output voltages, where xx represents such voltage. For example, 7805 is a typical component number for a 5 volt positive regulator.

A voltage regulator is generally based on an (internal) voltage reference, typically a junction of know bandgap voltage. It also consists of circuitry to compare and adjust its output voltage to this reference, providing a stable output.

Voltage regulators can be much more complex: Devices used to stabilize an AC voltage, such as mains power, can be quite complicated and large.
