Request for correction of CricInfo co-founder statement

Conflict-of-interest disclosure: I am Dr. Simon King, founder of CricInfo. Because I was directly involved in these events, I am requesting that an uninvolved editor review this issue rather than editing the article myself.

The article currently states that Vishal Misra “co-founded ESPNcricinfo (originally Cricinfo).”

I request that the statement that Misra “co-founded” CricInfo be removed. The published historical record cited below distinguishes between the founding of CricInfo by Dr. Simon King and Misra subsequently becoming part of the volunteer group.

Misra’s own published account

In a 2022 ESPNcricinfo article written by Vishal Misra himself, Misra describes how he and Travis Basevi became involved with CricInfo. He states that they “became part of the volunteer group of Cricinfo” and describes that group as being “led by Simon King.”

This is Misra’s own published description of his relationship to CricInfo: becoming part of the volunteer group led by Simon King.

Columbia Computer Science’s historical account

Columbia Computer Science has published an account of Misra’s involvement that similarly distinguishes between Simon King’s role and Misra’s subsequent involvement. It states that through the #cricket community Misra met “CricInfo’s founder Simon King” and describes Misra subsequently becoming involved with the project.

This source explicitly identifies Dr. Simon King—not Vishal Misra—as CricInfo’s founder.

ESPN’s history of CricInfo

ESPN’s published history of CricInfo states that CricInfo was founded in 1993 and describes its early development as “Led by Dr. Simon King and a group of like-minded volunteers.”

Again, this historical account distinguishes Dr. Simon King from the volunteer group that subsequently developed CricInfo.

Dave Liverman’s 2007 history of CricInfo

Additional historical context is available in a detailed history written in 2007 by Dave Liverman, an early CricInfo participant.

Liverman’s history describes the establishment of CricInfo in connection with Dr. Simon King and separately discusses Misra’s later involvement. It does not identify Misra as a founder or co-founder.

Liverman also records that in March 1999, “CricInfo at this time was still technically owned in its entirety by Simon King.”

In discussing the subsequent investment in CricInfo, Liverman again states that the shares were “still all owned by Simon at that point.”

I recognize that the surviving copy of Liverman’s history is now hosted on my own Medium account. I therefore provide it as supplementary historical context rather than relying upon it as the principal independent source for this request.

Requested correction

The current statement that Vishal Misra “co-founded” CricInfo is inconsistent with the historical accounts above, including Misra’s own published description of becoming part of the CricInfo volunteer group led by Simon King.

I therefore request that:

“In 1993, he co-founded ESPNcricinfo (originally Cricinfo)…”

be replaced with:

“Misra subsequently became part of the CricInfo volunteer group led by Dr. Simon King.”

This proposed wording does not attempt to resolve disputed dates, titles, or claims regarding Misra’s subsequent role. It simply reflects the published evidence concerning his relationship to CricInfo without attributing a founding role that is contradicted by the historical sources cited above.

I would appreciate review of these sources and correction by an uninvolved editor.
