To merge or not to merge?

This virion article should surely just redirect to virus or Virus#Structure Rod57 (talk) 15:24, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

Rod57 it should be a independent article from Virus as it has been a redirect more than I’ve been alive and it deserves a independent article as it is important for Portal:Virology and just deserves a article honestly. Atlas Þə Biologist (talk) 05:11, 30 November 2024 (UTC)

I think that the above suggestion ignores the fact that the virion exists outside of the host cell, whereas the same particle is called a virus during infection. This rather fine distinction stems from the fact that viral infections generally involve interactions between many virus particles, host cell machinery, and environmental factors, making the 'virus' technically a more complex and dynamic structure. For the survival of the genetic material outside of a cell, some kind of an outer shell is necessary, usually there is a capsid and maybe some lipidic membrane (Viral envelope). Upon infection, the virus usually loses these shells in a so called uncoating process. The article really needs to highlight this distinction explicitly, and in the lead.
