What are its strings tuned to? Surely this is a basic fact that should not be omitted from this article.

The violone is a viol--the largest size. No question. The presence of the root "viol-" in the word "violoncello" is a vestigial etymological holdover, nothing more. Badagnani 20:16, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

The Italian root is "viola", not "viol". The term "violone" was used for a large viol (viola da gamba) and for a large violin (viola da braccio). Corelli, for example, in the seventeenth century used "violone" to mean a cello-like instrument, larger than a typical modern cello, tuned CGda. I have recently amended the part of the cello article that talks about this etymology. Violone obsolete?

I don't think it should be described as obsolete (unless you are going to describe all the viol family, recorders, lutes, etc as obsolete). I know people who play the violone and at least one person who builds them. Bluewave 16:52, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
