Proposed additions: Notable VMS platforms section, ONVIF coverage, updated references
[edit]The article currently has a single citation (a broken link to avilion-int.com) and no coverage of open platform standards, cloud/hybrid deployment, or AI analytics — all of which are now central to how VMS is defined and purchased in the industry.
I'd like to propose the following additions:
1. A "Notable VMS platforms" section listing established vendors with Wikipedia articles or significant independent coverage. Suggested entries: Milestone Systems (XProtect), Genetec (Security Center), Avigilon (Unity/ACC), Wavestore (WaveView), Bosch Security Systems (BVMS), Hanwha Vision (Wisenet Wave), Eagle Eye Networks. Most have existing Wikipedia articles that could be wikilinked.
2. A brief "Open platform vs. proprietary VMS" subsection covering the ONVIF standard and its role in camera interoperability — currently unmentioned despite being the dominant industry standard since 2008. Citeable from ONVIF.org and independent trade press.
3. Replacement of the single broken reference with multiple reliable sources — IFSEC Global, SecurityInfoWatch, and Gartner have published substantive coverage of VMS as a category.
4. A short "Cloud and hybrid deployment" section reflecting the shift away from on-premise-only architectures that has occurred since the article was last substantively updated (~2016).
Disclosure: I work in the physical security industry and am raising this on the Talk page per Wikipedia's conflict-of-interest guidelines rather than editing directly. Happy for any editor to implement these changes as they see fit. Sebastian Marghella (talk) 14:47, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
