When was it invented and when published? Reading the quoted citation there is a mentioning of 2 earlier publications of Foner from 1956 and 1957. The one from 1956 is also to be found online: http://rsi.aip.org/resource/1/rsinak/v27/i7/p548_s1 it is less than a page long and without abstract, but the name itself is "Vibrating Sample Magnetometer" and if you can access the article then you will find out one of the figures from the 1959 publication is already in this publication, so in my opinion the publishing date should be altered in the article and the quote above should be added. According to AIP the 1959 article was cited 307 times, while the earlier one has just 37 citations. In some literature you might even read that the VSM was invented in 1959. --Do ut des (talk) 17:09, 18 January 2013 (UTC) BTW: In the footnote of the 1956 article is mentioned that a "H. Plotkin" invented a VSM in 1951 with a different coil configuration and most VSM which are nowerdays in use all have the coil configuration of Mallison http://jap.aip.org/resource/1/japiau/v37/i6/p2514_s1 Historically it is therefore difficult to say who invented the VSM since nowerdays the VSM are more or less Plotkin-VSM with a Mallison coil configuration...--Do ut des (talk) 12:48, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
