[edit]Is Venix really based on System III? Running the Venix 2 emulator, it's missing System III commands like cpio, dirname, rsh (the restricted shell). It doesn't have named pipes or the uname system call, both of which were introduced in System III. To me, it looks like a pure version 7 system with a few bsd extensions (csh, ex, vi, rmail). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Agarvin (talk • contribs)
- First Venix port/version was indeed based on Version 7 Unix per the 1984 PC Mag review. Venix hasn't received much attention thereafter, so I don't know if there even was a version based on Sys III. Someone not using his real name (talk) 06:33, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
- I think I've seen SysIII-based Venix, but I don't know where. TUHS doesn't seem to carry it in their archives. QVVERTYVS (hm?) 09:53, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
- Venix 2 has no traces of System III, it's a pure V7 with the usual BSD enhancements. This is from hands on experience – I have a 2.1 system operational on a 286 vintage machine. Hskrivervik (talk) 10:02, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
