Colour
[edit]The vaterite crystals can be greater than 10 microns in diameter. I am doing research on Molar Tooth fabrics, and most of the former vaterite crystals are greater than 10 microns.One of my SEM images

Questionable photo
[edit]I highly doubt that the photo shows vaterite. Similar crystals from other occurrences are always calcite, and I am not aware of such large vaterite crystals (compare http://www.mindat.org/gallery.php?min=4161).

Stabilizer (and destabilizer)
[edit]I think I have read that RE ions stabilize vaterite. The source of this information was probably the German mineral magazine Lapis in the second part of the 80s but this is probably not a primary source. According o the monohydrocalcite article Mg inhibits the formation of vaterite (and even calcite)
High Temperature?
[edit]The article claims it converts to aragonite at "high temperature (60°C)". That's wrong. I don't dispute the temperature, I dispute the claim that 60 C is a "high temperature". Certainly for *biology*, 60C is fairly high - thermophiles exist above 45C but hyperthermophiles are those organisms living above 80C - but I'm not aware of any other usage that would agree...maybe superconductivity? Anyway, it's just wrong because it misleads. My experience is that high temperature chemical reactions are those which occur well above 200C but it varies considerably. Sure, it depends on context, so what is the context here? I think the context should be mineralogy and geochemistry. In neither does 60C qualify as "high temperature".
