Mention is made of the Vaegirs of the Mount and Blade in-game world being modelled after Varangians. This does not seem to ring true, to be honest. That said, there is no official stance on what culture each faction is based off. Most seem to be fictional mixtures of combined real world cultures. I see that there is a quotation for Anglo Saxons being in Varangian guard. I find the reasoning in the article not compelling. How does one determine the ethnicity of refuges from England after the Norman conquest? At one time the author speaks of Anglo Saxon, than about Anglo Saxon and Danes and also of English. He talks also about the unreliability of his sources. The trade net through this person must have been traveling, must either have been the Varagian or Viking, so there would be the possibility it being only Danes, but the two groups were intermingled by than. I would still associate the two handed great ax, also famous with Varangian guard, rather with a Dane than an Anglo Saxon. Either the quote should change to Anglo Saxons and Danes or English. The book by D'amato doesn't appear to ratify the claims of a treaty in 874 and appears to be made off guess work to my best estimate. I can find no other references to this alleged 874 treaty aside from this, no secondary records except this one appear to exist. Logland Belaraus (talk) 11:40, 3 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
