[edit]The star is visible on this image (right and up from the center; compare with SIMBAD), but it is not indicated. Hobbema (talk) 07:52, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
- I've generated an image from this that hopefully expresses the location of the star in a useful way. Lithopsian (talk) 14:59, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
Talk on renaming
[edit]Hey @Lithopsian, I think it will be better to rename it M33 Var 83 rather than Var 83 and that makes more sense. Abdullah1099 (talk) 05:04, 19 March 2026 (UTC)
- Shock horror, Simbad doesn't mention the term "Var 83" at all, not even with one of its disambiguators. Still, that's what everyone calls it, albeit in a known context of talking about M33 variable or luminous stars. I'm struggling to find anyone calling it anything else except as part of largescale surveys. Simbad prefers "VHK 83", but that is used by exactly nobody in real life.
- See WP:PRECISE which suggests article titles should only be as precise as needed to make them unambiguous, and WP:TITLEDAB which describes "natural disambiguation" as acceptable in a title, but not obscure or made-up terms. "M33 Var 83" has occasionally been used, but not often and mostly when the object was first identified and hence not widely-known. Google scholar gave me 6 hits, only two in this century.
- There are no other "Var 83"s in Wikipedia (elsewhere maybe, but Google isn't showing me anything) that it could be confused with. If you think some people will be looking for it under a different name or needing confirmation that it is the M33 object, create some redirects, for example M33 Var 83; there are currently no redirects to this article which seems a bit mean for an astronomical object. - Ok, I understood the matter Abdullah1099 (talk) 16:25, 19 March 2026 (UTC)
