[edit]Perhaps these two poems could be moved to Wikisource? And, come to think of it, are we sure they are not copyrighted? Ahasuerus 03:16, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Requirements for changes to the page
[edit]I've made a first substantial Wikipedia contribution in over a decade, and it got rolled back; very bummed. If I understand it correctly, it's because citations are required? Are there different standards for English Wikipedia (vs. Russian one)? I just translated text from the Russian version of the page; there are no citations on that page. Given that this contribution was just a spur of the moment, I'm loathe to go do substantive research... At the top of the page, it literally says: "You can help expand this article with text translated from the corresponding article in Russian. (March 2024) Click [show] for important translation instructions." Is it enough to just resubmit my edits and add the 'Content in this edit is translated from the existing Russian Wikipedia article at ru:Шефнер, Вадим Сергеевич; see its history for attribution.' to the edit note?? - Well in English Wikipedia we are very strict about citations. Also, Wikipedia articles cannot be references for English Wikipedia. I am sorry for your wasted time. See our rules WP:CITE, WP:RS. I will talk to other people about updating the top notice with a warning about references. --Altenmann >talk 07:59, 5 December 2025 (UTC)
- I will try to find citations. It is definitely a challenge since most of the information (that's not just pop articles) is in the forewords to his books. Is that a legitimate source? Is author's autobiography a valid source? When I was contributing to Wikipedia many years ago, there were no citation rules :) It would really help me if you could go through what I was trying to post and flag which parts must be be referenced. - Yes, forewords are legitimate sources. Autobio if printed by a respectable publisher is generally OK on non-controversial issues.
- All parts must be referenced by Wikipedia rules. Of course within common sense.
- Wrong way to proceed: write a text and then try to find references. This leads to all kind of problems I will not discuss here, but some of them are really bad
- Correct way: open several books and summarize the relevant facts you wand to add into Wikipedia. In this way you will never have troubles with references. --Altenmann >talk 19:01, 12 December 2025 (UTC)
