Merging

I don't think merging this article into Alpine-steppe is advisable. Alpine-steppe is a high-altitude grassland, while this article is about a type of montane forest.

I am concerned that it is very difficult to write generically about "upper montane forests" worldwide. The article is currently focused on forests in the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada (Lassen Park is right on the boundary between the Sierra Nevada ecoregion and the Eastern Cascades Slopes and Foothills ecoregion).

I would propose a different organization of the material: how about starting an article about the Sierra Nevada upper montane forest, and incorporate the Rocky Mountain material into Ecology of the Rocky Mountains? —hike395 (talk) 11:29, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

• Don't merge - Alpine-Steppe is grassland, not forest. I agree with Hike395 that a worldwide upper montane forest article is unwieldy. But it is not impossible. A structure might be to start at one rough longitude, like the Sierra Nevadas and Cascades, then work eastward, adding sections. Content for the individual sections should include what is dominant or characteristic in that particular montane forest, and also what differentiates it from other (especially nearby) montane forests. When sufficient content is added to justify starting new articles, like Sierra Nevada upper montane forest (which I was about to start when I piled up enough content), then keep just the very general info in the section here. The general info might be the same as or very similar to the lead section in the more specific separate article. FloraWilde (talk) 16:38, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
