- The source says: "During operation, shale is fed through the bottom of the inverted-cone vessel. ... Hot gases enter the top of the retort and pass down through the rising bed, causing kerogen pyrolysis. Shale oil and gas flow down through the bed. The oil accumulates in a pool at the bottom. ...
