Etymology

Does anyone know the etymology behind "Tyto"?--Mr Fink 01:21, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
I must look pretty biased here, but I think it may have something to do with "tuto (Greek) - "night owl"" KalebOfTyto (talk) 18:49, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

Species list

@UtherSRG: Thanks for the ping. Took me some effort to work out what had changed. The anon has added the Seram masked owl (Tyto almae). This taxon was first described in 2013 and is recognised as a full species by BirdLife/IUCN. Wikipedia has an article. But the IOC considers it as subspecies of the Moluccan masked owl (Tyto sororcula).

AviList has lumped some of these owls and includes the comment: "Tyto almae is a recently described taxon, known from a single specimen (Jønsson et al. 2013). Morphological differences from Tyto sororcula (also known from very few specimens) are slight, and the available genetic data (mitochondrial DNA only) suggest that neither almae nor Tyto sororcula show significant genetic divergence from Tyto novaehollandiae."
