Main article?

[edit]

I created this article, of course, because of the effects throughout Taiwan and South China. That's why I thought it's a good idea for Podul to have its own article. Do you think so?

Title Change

[edit]

Can you change it to Typhoon Podul (2025)? ThopazProductions (talk) 01:23, 16 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

The result of the move request was: not moved. per snowball clause icon as "Typoon Podul" is the only WP:PRIMARYTOPIC (closed by non-admin page mover) Agent 007 (talk) 20:28, 21 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Typhoon PodulTyphoon Podul (2025) – This typhoon name has not been retired yet. It goes against WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Sinsyuan✍️TWGA 00:23, 17 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Oppose: This is the only "Typhoon" Podul that caused enough damage. The 2001 Typhoon Podul was a Cat 5 typhoon but didn't affect land, and the rest are tropical or severe tropical storm status. Elios Peredhel (talk) 13:53, 17 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oppose: When a tropical cyclone is the only one of its name to reach a certain category, the year is often omitted from the article's title. Examples include Hurricane Joaquin, Hurricane Patricia, and Typhoon Surigae. Hurricane Jacob (talk) 03:25, 18 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Hurricane Jacob When a tropical cyclone is the only one of its name to reach a certain category, ... There are two. 218.250.114.83 (talk) 17:50, 18 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sorry about that, I meant "When a tropical cyclone is the only one of its name to reach a certain category and have an article" Hurricane Jacob (talk) 18:24, 18 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oppose. This is definitely the most notable Typhoon Podul so far, and omitting the year is also done for non-retired names, with Typhoon In-fa in 2021 being the best example that I can think of (although personally I would have wanted the latter to be retired, but alas). Vida0007 (talk) 02:12, 19 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Strong Oppose only notable Podul that deserves a page, others either don't have a page or aren't notable enough Accordthemusician (talk) 07:50, 19 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thus, is this Podul suitable for WP:PRIMARYTOPIC? If yes, close this discussion. Sinsyuan✍️TWGA 00:46, 20 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oppose: I have the same thoughts as above. This is one of the only two "Podul" to strengthen into a typhoon, but the 2025 Podul caused much more damage than the 2001 Podul. EmperorChesser (talk) 10:25, 21 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oppose: Yes, the 2001 Podul was classified three categories higher than this Podul, but the earlier did not affect land at all and does not have its standalone Wikipedia article. All other Poduls did not even reach typhoon strength. harukaamaranth 11:34, 21 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Fatalities

[edit]

One or two? The Kaohsiung man was killed by the storm but the Chiayi man, as the article reported, was killed. Does that count as a fatality? Or am I having comprehension problems (if that is the case, please kindly tell me)? Elios Peredhel (talk) 13:56, 17 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

English variant and date formats

[edit]

I want to say that I strongly oppose the fact that dates in the format date/month/year (e.g. 12 August, 12 August 2025) or British English words (e.g. characterised, favourable, ...)

This is not because I am an American or I hate British Englishit's because of the general formats for articles related to the storms in the Western Pacific basin. As you can see in almost all or all of the articles regarding this, including ones about the annual typhoon seasons, the common accepted formats are dates in month/day/year format (e.g. August 12 | August 12, 2025) and no English variant templates, such as {{Use British English}} or {{Use American English}}. This would prefer, NOT enforce, American style, and some British spelling variants such as controlled and towards (compared to controled and toward in American English) are still acceptable.

To sum up, I do not think that articles in this category should not be exclusive to British spelling and date/month/year dates. Remember thisespecially for users like 218.250.114.83. Why am I mentioning this user? You know. EmperorChesser (talk) 10:55, 21 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

I will note that I agree and point to the later-dated, similar discussion on Talk:Tropical Storm Wipha (2025)#Unified date format and English accent per MoS (permalink). Sam Sailor 20:05, 27 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
