Is there such a thing as twins who are identical except for being different sex?

My curiosity as to this is raised by experiences of sometimes meeting twins, one male, one female, but otherwise nearly identical, same eye and hair color down to the shade, same height, body type, approximate build, same laugh and speech intonations, same interests and aptitudes. Expert needed in "Animals" section

This revision in 2023 added basically the entire Animals section, using incomplete parenthetical references. I've gone through and added full citations where I was able to figure out what sources the author meant, but I was unable to in a few cases. I only had the time to check one of the sources (Rickard 2022) to see if it fully verified what the article was saying. It appears to me that there remains a significant amount of the section which isn't verifiably cited, and I wonder if it contains synthesis or original research. I've gone ahead and tagged the section for expert attention since it clearly needs a rewrite and better sourcing. In particular, the Varella et al. source triggered a predatory journal warning; and the phrase "scientists... have proven" raises a red flag. —Em-as-in-emily (talk) 07:15, 14 May 2026 (UTC)

"Mixed twins"

I was surprised to find this subsection here, and I find the treatment of the subject rather confused and its placement amongst biological topics inappropriate. Unlike the other topics—superfecundation, discordant karotypes, sesquizygotic twinning, and mirror twinning—there is no biological reality at play with this phenomenon, which likely explains why nobody has managed to find serious sources for this subsection (or for its related article), just newspaper columns and tabloids.

This topic could have a serious sociological or anthropological treatment, but currently it does not. One obvious absurdity is the conflation of geographic and racial classifications (neither of which, again, are biological) by describing the father as Caribbean (geographic) and the mother as white (racial). The associated article contains the embarrassment of a source that takes a single geneticist's spitballing at face value and seriously claims a "one in a million" probability of having a black and white pair of twins—again, a statement that is not possible to root in any kind of genetic reality. I would soon enough just remove this sloppy section and possibly nominate the (poorly sourced) article for deletion. Einsof (talk) 21:41, 7 June 2026 (UTC)
