Initial remark

[edit]

Needed some editing, but now satisfactory.  Preceding unsigned comment added by DGG (talkcontribs) 03:11, 18 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

What's the name mean?

[edit]

where did the name come from?

And what about "trivago guy" in the TV ads? Wasn't there quite a bit of web chatter about his appearance?Feldercarb (talk) 23:48, 19 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

I think the name is German for "We claim to check over a million hotels even though there are not a million hotels in the entire world."  Preceding unsigned comment added by 2606:A000:C68C:A300:E4DB:D33B:9E3C:8300 (talk) 20:34, 5 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

The article reads like company-sponsored and company-edited advertisment

[edit]

A lot of the content is either low quality and/or reads like advertisement coming straight from one of the company's "social media managers". Looking at the article History, others have noticed this before. A shame that Wikipedia continues being limited in its usefulness as long as such self-serving actions by these companies are not being restricted more effectively.  Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7D:CA1:7B00:BDE1:9F69:98A0:1E73 (talk) 20:11, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

  Unable to implement

  • Thank you for providing references with the request. That was much appreciated.
  • Unfortunately, your request still cannot be reviewed because the provided references are not formatted correctly.[a] The citation style predominantly used by the Trivago article is Citation Style 1 (CS1). The citation style used in the edit request consists of bare URL's.[b] As I stated in my previous reply, any requested edit of yours which may be implemented will need to resemble the current style already in use in the article – in this case, CS1. (See WP:CITEVAR.) In the extended section below titled Citation style, I have illustrated two examples: one showing how the edit request was submitted, and another showing how requests should be submitted in the future:
  • Kindly resubmit the edit request below this post at your earliest convenience, taking care to ensure that it makes use of CS1. If you have any questions about this formatting please don't hesitate to ask myself or another editor.
  • Additionally, if the COI editor receives, or expects to receive, compensation for any contribution they make, they must disclose their employer, client, and affiliation to comply with Wikipedia's terms of use and the policy on paid editing.

Partially implemented I've removed the inaccurate percentages from the prose. The other information which is requested to be changed cannot be omitted because it is referenced. If the information no longer holds true, then the claim should be added to by stating that a different system/operation/way of doing things occurs (and as of when should be stated). ownership confusion

[edit]

The information box on the right says a it is publicly trader firm True), and then later says it is owned by Expedia.

Expedia owns a stake, as explained in the main body, but it does not own the entire firm.

Suggestion: Remove Ownership: Expedia from the right side panel.

Thank you, Spintendo, for your help on the edits we have suggested. We were hoping to correct two remaining inaccuracies on the page. Please note that we have a Conflict of Interest and appreciate your help maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the page. 1. We would like to request the edit to the following text, as the current reference listed does not match the value of the sale in USD. We have a link with the correct reference in euros.

"In December 2010, Trivago sold a quarter of the company for US$52.86 million to a US investment fund, Insight Venture Partners."

Should instead be corrected to: "In 2010, Insight Venture Partners acquired a percentage equity ownership of trivago for €42.5 million [1]" 2. We would like to request the edit to the following text which includes outdated site numbers. We have referenced the correct text and included “as of when” to reflect when these number changes.

“Trivago claims to be the world's largest online hotel search site, comparing rates from over 1 million hotels and more than 250 booking sites worldwide. The site includes over 190 million hotel ratings and 14 million photos, and reports over 120 million visitors per month."

Suggested change to: "As of March 31, 2019, trivago offered access to more than 3.0 million hotels and other types of accommodation including over 1.8 million units of alternative accommodation, such as vacation rentals and private apartments, in over 190 countries. [2]"

History

ADD: In 2023, trivago announced a significant transformation in its leadership structure, welcoming a team of accomplished travel industry executives, who played significant roles in the company’s worldwide growth.

Johannes Thomas assumed the role of CEO and Managing Director, succeeding Axel Hefer, who chose not to extend his contract. Jasmine Ezz rejoined as Chief Marketing Officer and Andrej Lehnert as Chief Product Officer. trivago founder, Rolf Schrömgens, also returned to the company first as an advisor and then joined the supervisory board.

Business Model

As a hotel price comparison website, Trivago makes money from advertising partners primarily using a cost-per-click (CPC) business model. Booking platforms, hoteliers and other providers list rates and advertise on the Trivago site, paying for the clicks received from Trivago users.

Trivago also offers free and fee-based versions of its Hotel Manager product, which hoteliers use to market their facilities on the Trivago site. Trivago claims to be the world's largest online hotel search site, comparing rates from over 1 million hotels and more than 250 booking sites worldwide. Since their majority shareholder is Expedia, the effort is to direct bookings to their sites by way of various "adjustments" to how other sites' rates are perceived.

Marketing

ADD: In Q4 2023, trivago announced a brand evolution. The refreshed brand features a new logo and visual identity, which will debut with a first-of-its-kind AI- driven television advertising campaign. The essence of trivago’s brand refresh is captured by its promise to help users “Search Savvy. Feel Super.”

Key elements of trivago’s refresh include a new logo with a more vibrant and inviting look. The new symbol doubles as a checkmark, representing how easy it is to find a hotel that suits your needs on trivago, and a smile, reflecting that satisfied feeling when you’ve scored that great deal because you used trivago.

“The refresh is in line with our goal to strengthen the trivago brand. By combining our strong existing brand cues with a set of new, highly distinct and memorable elements, we aim to cut through the noise and stand out in the competitive travel market,” said Jasmine Ezz, CMO of trivago. “This evolution is about building on our solid foundation, reinforcing our identity, and making it more resonant and engaging.”

Company Flag - THERE IS NO COMPANY FLAG, PLEASE REMOVE

The "Trivago Guy

UPDATE (to past tense): When the company aired its first U.S. TV advertisement in 2012, the ad's spokesman inspired a trending Twitter hashtag, #trivagoguy, based on his unusual look.[30] According to Rolling Stone, Trivago "wanted someone real, approachable and genuine" when it chose actor Tim Williams to star in the ad. The Trivago guy became an unexpected celebrity, with some people noting his unbuttoned shirt and creepy vibe, while others found his scruffy appearance and deep voice "inexplicably sexy".

Trivago responded to the comments by launching a contest that invited people to give the Trivago guy a makeover. The Trivago guy inspired parodies, fan fiction and a large gay following.

Many commenters asked why Trivago chose not to have the actor wear a belt. According to the actor, that was an accident. "Unfortunately none of the belts fit the belt loops that I had on," Williams said. "I think that was probably the best break we could have gotten." Following the large response for the U.S. Trivago guy, the company decided to create French and Spanish Trivago guys. From 2016 until June 2017, the French actor Mehdi Nebbou was the German Trivago guy.

For Latin America (the whole Spanish-speaking region) Trivago's commercials were are presented by Spanish actor Gonzalo Peña. In Brazil, the man shown on screen wasis the well-known actor and model Willian Mello.

In 2016, the company aired ads in India with Abhinav Kumar. Abhinav became popular and an internet sensation for his role in ubiquitous Trivago ads in India. As of now the Trivago guy has turned into an internet meme.

ADD: In late 2023, trivago welcomed a new “trivago guy” who will be featured in the company’s advertising campaigns. By employing AI tools, trivago produced localized TV ads in more than 10 different languages, all featuring the same actor, but with uniquely tailored, culturally relevant voiceovers for each market.

The "Trivago girl"

In the UK, Trivago's advertisements were fronted by Australian actress and musician Gabrielle Miller. In Japan, Trivago wasis represented in their TV commercials by singer/songwriter Natalie Emmons, who uses the pseudonym "Strae" in the United States. In Malaysia, actress and TV host Dahlia Shazwan starred in Trivago's advertisements.

Legal Issues

UPDATE AS FOLLOWS:

In August 2018, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) instituted proceedings  in the Federal Court of Australia against Trivago alleging that the company had made misleading representations on their Australian website and in their Australian television advertising. The ACCC case started in the Federal Court of Australia in September 2019.

In January 2020, the Federal Court of Australia found that Trivago engaged in Australia in conduct that was or was likely to be misleading or deceptive [CT3] and that therefore contravened Australian Consumer Law. The ACCC argued Trivago promised Australian customers impartial, objective and transparent hotel price comparisons which would allow them to quickly and easily identify the cheapest offer available whereas the listing of an offer on Trivago’s Australian website was subject to the payment of a fee (Cost Per Click) by advertisers and whereas Trivago did not show the cheapest offer.. The ACCC claimed Trivago failed to properly disclose its operating model and used misleading "strike-through" price comparisons that compared a more expensive luxury room with a standard room.

In April 2022, the Federal Court of Australia fined Trivago AUD44.7 million (plus legal costs) for misleading Australian consumers whereas the ACCC had pushed for a fine of at least AUD90 million. Justice Moshinsky of the Federal Court of Australia noted Trivago’s breaches of the Australian law were "extremely serious".

CONSIDER ADDING: To support its ruling, the Court noted that Trivago promised Australian customers impartial, objective and transparent hotel price comparison which would allow them to quickly and easily identify the cheapest offer available whereas the listing of an offer on Trivago’s Australian website was subject to the payment of a minimum fee by advertisers and whereas, in some cases, Trivago did not show the cheapest offer.  The Court also noted that Trivago used misleading “strike-through” price comparisons that were not always based on prices offered for the same room category in the same hotel.” Peppercomm (talk) 19:16, 10 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
