Hey, not so fast. That would be a RDEM! Else you would be comparing apples to apples, instead of oranges.

in mapping and analysis is that the points of a TIN are distributed variably based on an algorithm that determines which points are most necessary to create an accurate representation of the terrain. Data input is therefore flexible and fewer points need to be stored than in a raster DEM, with regularly distributed points. While a TIN may be considered less suited than a raster DEM for certain kinds of GIS applications, such as analysis of a surface's slope and aspect, it is often used in CAD to create contour lines. A DTM and DSM can be formed from a DEM.
A DEM can be interpolated from a TIN.

Hey, back in sentence one you said "A TIN ... is often called a ... DEM". Now you say "A DEM can be interpolated from a TIN." In a court of law a judge would want clearer parent / child relationships. No need to explain them here on the Talk page. This is all over my head. Just fix the article somehow. Not the same format as Tetin

ICEM CFD uses a completely different format called tetin, which only shares the .tin file extension. The data in it can be point data, but also NURBS curves, surfaces and trim curves. There is a specification of that format in the Ansys installation format, and it has no similarity to the tin format described here. If there is no objection I will delete the offending reference to ICEM when I get around to it. (or you do it)
