Top Setting Onions On Marginal Land

Top setting onions are sometimes preferred in dry climates as being less demanding of water than other onions. In such locations a bulb near the roots might not be produced in a long hot growing season, even when irrigation is provided. The young green leaves may be the intended crop, and the top sets can be more reliable for propagation than seed producing onions that might not flower in the climate.
