re declarations: a clarification on "may declare them any time before playing one of them to a trick"

Does anyone perhaps know exactly when are the windows for this 'any time' here or even typically for trick-taking games? Is it only when one leads a trick? That seems most sensible to me, but perhaps can one interrupt whoever is leading the trick, as one trick has ended and before another has started to make their declarations too? Sounds awkward operationally but it does say "any time"... Yet it cannot possibly be literally "any time" as it at least couldn't have been meant to be in the middle of the trick: Dummett's chapter on trappola, discussing the rule about not being able to declare a set of 3 after you have captured the 4th: "There is, however, no support for this interpretation in the rules of the later forms of the game, and it is highly tentative; it would provide a very strong incentive for making one's declarations early." (despite this grumbling he still thinks that's the correct interpretation btw ^^) -- so clearly he doesn't think "any time" includes in the middle of playing a trick, else one would have no incentive at all for making one's declarations early in this rule, as they could declare their set of 3 at the very moment of throwing the card that captures the 4th card of the set. 141.138.34.244 (talk) 15:50, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
