Tralee Speedway track surface

While I’m not sure of the surface prior to it being asphalt, when the asphalt was torn up it was a decomposed granite surface, not dolomite and clay. Later it was changed to clay.

It may have been originally dolomite and clay but I was of the impression that it was decomposed granite from Bernie Morrison’s Tralee granite quarry which was where the material came from when the asphalt was removed.
I began my connection with Tralee Speedway racing in super sedans on asphalt with many of the drivers mentioned. I also raced on the larger half mile dirt track built alongside for both car and truck racing while the quarter mile track was still asphalt. I continued racing on the decomposed granite track after the asphalt was removed.
I also helped with the track preparation of the quarter mile track when it went back to dirt (decomposed granite) so am certain of that fact.
I became friends with many of the drivers of all classes of vehicles, local, from other parts of Australia and from America, as a member and later treasurer of the Canberra Saloon Car Club and working in the tin shed clubhouse providing food, drinks and entertainment after the races.
