Kratz took up karting in his early twenties before making his Nürburgring Nordschleife debut in car racing in 1998. He spent several years competing in Rundstrecken Challenge Nürburgring (RCN) events before also taking up VLN endurance racing, finishing as RCN runner-up in 2007 and winning the ADAC Nordrhein circuit trophy in 2009 and 2010. During this period, he also began working as an instructor for the Porsche Sports Driving School.
