I am too lazy to update, but the 2016 census is here and the numbers are VERY different from 2005. http://torrevieja.es/sal/ayuntamiento/censo/censo%20y%20estadistica/datosmes/2016-12-01;%20Distribuci%C3%B3n%20por%20nacionalidades.pdf 213.250.154.198 (talk) 06:34, 13 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Valencian language

[edit]

Other articles for Spanish municipalities include names in other official languages if they have a historical tradition, even when they are not the official name (e.g. Xàtiva, Alzira include the historical Spanish name, Orihuela includes the historical Valencian name). Therefore I am reinstating the name in Valencian. I am also reinstating the mention of Valencian as an official language, as Valencian being an official language in the Valencian Community is an objective fact. Regardless of the predomini lingüístic, other articles about Valencian municipalities mention both languages as official (refer to the articles above). That's not correct. The difference is that in places like Xátiva or Alzira, Spanish is widely spoken.

In Torrevieja, there has never been any other official language that hasn't been Spanish since its creation. Unlike Orihuela, where the language was spoken many centuries ago... in Torrevieja, Valencian was never spoken. --~2026-40651-4 (talk) 14:29, 19 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Valencian is an official language in the whole Valencian Community. That is an undisputed, objective fact. Per the Statute of Autonomy:
"Valencian is the official language in the Valencian Community, as is Spanish."
Therefore, I am reinstating this mention.
As for the name, since the town was founded in the 19th century, it is true that Valencian has never been widely spoken in it. I'd still consider it relevant to include it since Valencian is also offcial, but I'll wait for other people's input before restoring it. Flopgui (talk) 17:48, 22 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
As far as I know, the Valencian Community has the same language laws as Navarre. There are "municipios de predominio lingüístico castellanoparlante" or "zona mixta" "zona valencianoparlante / zona vascófona" Torrevieja, just as Orihuela and every single municipality from the Vega Baja del Segura (except for Guardamar del Segura) are uniquely Spanish speaking. That's according to the linguistic map of the Generalitat Valenciana. Vitoria85 (talk) 23:49, 22 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
The concept of "predominio lingüístico" is different from the zonification in Navarre. In the Valencian Community, both languages are official in all the territory. The "predominio lingüístico" defines which language is used in public education and some other things, but both remain official.
If we want to include only Spanish as official language in this article, then we should be consistent and include only Valencian in the articles about Valencia, Alcoi or Alicante. Some articles such as Albaida do just that.
I believe a good option is saying "Spanish (predominio lingüístico) and Valencian", and also updating the other articles accordingly. Another option is to just get rid of the "Official languages" field and replace it with a "predominio lingüístico" field, like Spanish and Catalan wikipedias do. What do you think? Hey, sure, I agree with your latest edit. I will add that source in the page of Orihuela as well. Vitoria85 (talk) 12:56, 24 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

I don't think putting it in Valencian would make any sense... yet it doesn't harm, either. Maybe putting it like in Orihuela, without bolding? Well, in Orihuela there has been an edit war between 2 anonymous trolls, but that's apart. --Vitoria85 (talk) 23:50, 22 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Not any sense? Maybe you ignore that we Valencian (Catalan) speaking families (from Alcoi) only call these towns Torrevella, Oriola, Alacant, etc.?
If the town from it's foundation (recent, relatively) only has been named in Castillian, it's not trivial, and "maybe" this has been because of a terrific crime commited by the Borbonic absolutist (proto-nazi) regime? Then we had the Restauration, then we had Primo de Rivera dictatorship, then we had Franco dictatorship, and today some people still assume as natural such a tremendous totalitarian and absolutist heritage! To steal and replace the identity of a people is not just some side-efect of history. It's coldblooded designed ethnocide! ~2026-31964-20 (talk) 13:53, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
