Can we get proof/citation that Toriel is the biological parent of Asriel?

[edit]

That is stated nowhere in the game, nor does Asriel ever appear in the game.

Edit: I was referring to Deltarune. Fivework (talk) 01:56, 2 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Why as 3D render?

[edit]

This render appears nowhere in either game, nor in any notable associated materials like trailers or store pages. To be blunt, the jokey #D render used in the trailer has more relevance to the canon character. Shouldn't we replace it with her pixel art sprite? Harmonia per misericordia. I think I found a pretty good source.

[edit]

I just found this Brazilian source which is reliable (Universo Online) and gives a lot of significant coverage about Toriel specifically (even mentioning her in the title). It should count as "proper examination or discussion of the character". Skyshifter talk 16:42, 23 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

What makes Universo Online reliable? - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 01:15, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
One of the biggest Brazilian websites, it is part of Grupo Folha, the second largest Brazilian media conglomerate, existing since 1921, which also publishes the largest paper of the country, Folha de S.Paulo. Skyshifter talk 01:34, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
See WP:BLOGS and WP:NEWSBLOG. That page you referenced is an opinion blog by what appears to be a columnist (Fabricio Aguiar). ... blogs may not be subject to the news organization's normal fact-checking process ... At best, you could say that "Fabricio Aguiar writes..." Tarl N. (discuss) 04:32, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I didn't consider that. I guess the source doesn't help much then. Skyshifter talk 04:38, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
It looks like Aguiar has written column pieces and articles on this publication for years. As a presumably professional writer, I don't think it's a bad source. Just not quite as strong as it would've been if it hadn't been labeled as an opinion piece, but we are talking about fiction here. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 06:41, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Do we know any of the author's expertise or credentials? - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 18:08, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
I wasn't able to find anything about them outside of this publication, so yes, that's pretty weak again. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 06:59, 12 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Pointless-ness of Waray editions of these articles.

[edit]

Someone from the Waray Wikipedia created 3 articles for Toriel, Sans, and Flowey: they all look really bad, and besides, they don't even have an article for Undertale itself there despite making articles for those 3 characters in it. QuantumFoam66 (talk) 01:39, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

good, discuss that there. the english and waray wikipedias are separate projects cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 11:25, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
A Waray version of the Undertale article itself actually does exist now. QuantumFoam66 (talk) 04:22, 22 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Toriel character image

[edit]

The character image does not faithfully represent what Toriel looks like in the game; are there any 8-bit images that show her in the game? 2600:8802:3A10:8E00:B423:2E3A:386C:D510 (talk) 00:31, 16 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

if you mean the design thing, i'd say
  • toriel isn't monochrome. her overworld sprites show as much, with her outfits in funny papyrus game and funny spamton game very distinctly being primarily blue (which, to my knowledge, is not a shade of black, gray, or white)
  • what are the innacuracies the official enough fangamer render have compared to her design in undertale anyway? you didn't really mention anything past her color scheme
  • undertale's artstyle is based on 16-bit games, come on!!
thus, i'm pretty firmly on kfm's side in saying that no, that render isn't really inaccurate consarn (grave) (obituary) 01:37, 16 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
yes go to the sprites folder in a undertale install Zendonaldson (talk) 00:04, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

The image

[edit]

@Consarn I believe that the ingame 8bit style sprite is more fitting to the encyclopedia page as the wiki is supposed to as accurately as possible describe whatever the article is about. If the 3D render is used, it would be misleading as that may not be what Toby Fox wanted Toriel to be. Also seeing as there are other Undertale characters on the wiki that use the accurate sprite as seen in Undertale, I see no reason using the fan made render that is not resembling the game’s style, when the normal sprite is available. LeanderZ (talk) 10:19, 21 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

it's not 8-bit, come on!!
it's not actually a fan-made render, but a fangamer render. you know, the company that partnered with toby to make spamton sweepstakes happen. if you want to argue numbers, there are three or four with sprites (alphys, asgore, and kris, plus gaster if you're not feeling spicy), and five with fangamer renders (flowey, papyrus, sans undertale from the hit game mother 2, toriel, and undyne)
ideally, i think the best solution would be to scrounge up renders of the characters currently without them, but that's wishful thinking and i only found one for temmie within like 2 minutes of looking. either way, there was already some edit warring about this, so in those cases, it's best to have consensus for a change first, and hold the pre-change diff until some consensus is reached (unless that diff is unambiguously problematic, which... isn't really the case here, to my knowledge) consarn (grave) (obituary) 14:27, 21 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
  • I agree that a 2D render of Toriel directly from Undertale would be more a more suitable lead image than the current one. MOS:LEADIMAGE states that the lead image should be "representative" to "give readers visual confirmation that they've arrived at the right page" and be an "image used for similar purposes in high-quality reference works." Toriel is always depicted as a 2D sprite in the games, and sources consistently use that depiction when illustrating or discussing her. TarkusABtalk/contrib 19:16, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
problem: do we use an overworld sprite that is smaller and leaves some detail out, or the battle sprite that leaves her color scheme out? as far as official material goes, the fangamer figure is a happy medium consarn (grave) (obituary) 19:25, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
It would be a happy medium if it was a 2d sprite as she is seen in-game. Readers may be mislead if they see that the wiki represents her with the fangamer 3d sprite when the detailed 2d in-game sprite is available. if it is such a problem that the sprite does not give the color scheme, it can be written. There is not a single time you see toriel as 3d in any of tobies game, in fact toby did not make it. dont you think it is more appropriate to put an image that got made by the carachters creator? Also, wikipedia is the only website that uses the 3d render to show toriel. LeanderZ (talk) 15:15, 19 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
being made by the lead dev of something isn't really a requirement in the first place, just being official. take kris, for example, whose overworld sprites (which are used here) weren't really made by that foam guy. the way i see it, using the battle sprite and then saying "she's not actually monochrome btw" seems more like extra steps than a happy medium
could also mention ff6 characters like kefka, who use concept art instead of in-game sprites consarn (grave) (obituary) 16:02, 19 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
The only website out of what? As far as I know artwork is usually preferred over in-game assets on Wikipedia. Pretty much every game character who has official art uses that as their infobox image. Ringtail Raider (talk) 03:09, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
