This is inappropriate use of the technical tag. You are supposed to explain what is too technical about it. Many technical topics are not important to "regular folks". --C S (talk) 12:07, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

Although tmf is a technically very demanding topic, is it possible to write in a way which is enjoyable also for non-experts in stable homotopy theory. See the ICM article by Hopkins and the survey by Lurie in the references. The article should be rewritten in a more reader-friendly and complete way. Technical jargon

It would be helpful if someone with technical knowledge could translate this (especially the introductory paragraph) into language for the layperson. For example, a TMF analyst does what? why? how? Where (e.g., in industry?) would TMF be found? What is the significance or importance? How does TMF compare to any alternatives or parallel approaches?
