Name

Thearticle name says Bell Atlantic Tower, but has it been changed to Verizon Tower, i keep on seeing more and more refrences to Verizon Tower then Bell Atlantic. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 05:52, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Outside the Tower I believe it still says Bell Atlantic. Nonetheless, Verizon Tower should redirect here (if it does not already) until this is sorted out. Jfingers88 03:29, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

  • I'm frankly surprised by the opposition here. Wikipedia is not a soapbox, blog, crystal ball or newspaper. So what? "Official names of sponsored sports teams, tournaments and venues change whenever a sponsorship agreement begins or ends." Generally when the naming rights to a sports venue change, we promptly update to the new sponsored name, as that will be the name commonly used in TV and newspaper coverage. I don't see why a building should be much different, though this building will likely get much less coverage in common sources than sports venues. Ironically this name change actually removes the name of a corporate sponsor and replaces it with something more generic, as Cinergy Field → Riverfront Stadium. See Logan Square, Philadelphia.     • Generally when the naming rights to a sports venue change, we promptly update to the new sponsored name, as that will be the name commonly used in TV and newspaper coverage. Yes, if and only if the new official name is quickly adopted, we adopt it too, and that is the test here as well. And no such case has been made. That's the whole point. this building will likely get much less coverage in common sources than sports venues - Exactly. It's less likely that the common name will change, and all the more important to verify that it has. Which has patently not been done above. Is an argument being made that this building, as that one, has some historic significance, and thus the name should be preserved as a historic name? That appears to be a pure straw man.       • OK, I understand your point now. I was not intending to make a straw man argument, just attempting to get some clarity on the issues involved. Now I've got it. Do you know of any similar building renames we can use for guidance on how to go about determining when the "common name" has actually switched to the new name, if it has.       • Articles by keyword: Bell Atlantic Tower (philly.com) The site has no similar index yet for the new name. I don't think we should give equal weight to common usage in the entire history, as then it might take a long time for the weight of newer, current usage to outweigh that of historical usage. The most recent story, "Business news in brief", July 2, 2013 says that Brandywine owns three office buildings in the Logan Square area, including the former Bell Atlantic Tower, now called Three Logan Square. I believe Philly.com is the website of the main newspaper(s) in Philadelphia. Should we wait for them to no longer feel the need to refer to the building as "the former Bell Atlantic Tower" before we make our move? I don't think we need to wait for such confirmation.
