Thoracostomy and thoracotomy are different things. Thoracostomy involves making a communication between the thoracic cavity and the outside world for the emergency treatment of tension pneumothorax. Thoracotomy refers to opening the chest to manipulate the heart/lungs etc. Why is this redirected?
