Surviving portraits of Thomas Cundy III?
[edit]While researching Thomas Cundy III and the history of the Grosvenor Estate, I came across a potentially interesting reference that may indicate the existence of a contemporary portrait.
In John Lucas, Portrait Painter, 1828–1874 (1910), Arthur Lucas notes that the portrait painter John Lucas recorded sittings by "Thos. Cundy Esq. and his wife" during the summer of 1873:
- "The Honble. Mrs. Alexander S. Leslie-Melville, and her husband ... were also giving sittings for half-lengths, and Thos. Cundy Esq. and his wife during the summer months of this year."
The memoir continues to refer to "Mr and Mrs Cundy" sitting for Lucas in 1873, suggesting that one or more portraits were actually being painted at that time.
