I believe he must have been ca. 20-21 years old, not 39; given he was born 28 December 1840 and the American Civil War was 1861-1865. The German version (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Pergande) says he arrived at the beginning of the Amerian Civil War.
