This theme, "knowing the name controls the thing/creature", is familiar from fairytales, and may also be seen as the essence of linguistic consiousness - naming, verbalizing things makes us able to deal with them. And man gave name to all the animals... Is there an article dealing with such themes - in literature, their history etc. - that one may link here?--Niels Ø 21:33, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Yes the Mr. Underhill thing should be mentioned - this is the travelling name given to Bilbo by Gandalf in Tolkin's 'The Hobbit' - the fact that both 'underhills' are pesudonyms is striking too. 87.194.8.48 (talk) 10:31, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

i am trying to find this novel

i know for a fact i had this novel to read in my 8th grade year in my literature book. i need to find the english literature book this novel was in when i was in school. this means the literature book would have been copyrighted before 1983. that should narrow it down a lot. can someone find the literature book this novel is in? the biloxi mississippi school system was where i went. 199.33.91.59 (talk) 20:21, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
