Tidal range
[edit]The tidal range outside the heads is about 1.2 metres. Inside the bay, the range is less, often no more than 0.5 metres. See <http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/oceanography/tides/tide_predications.cgi>
There is simply no way for the water level inside the bay to get to be 5 metres above or below the level in Bass Strait.
The large water flow through the heads is driven by the very large reservoir of water within the bay relative to the small flow volume possible through the heads. This is illustrated by the fact that the fastest flow occurs at low and high tides, and that flow reverses midway between high and low tides. The bay never empties down to low tide level outside the heads, nor fills to the high tide level.
