Relevance

As well as its literary and historical merit, one reason why the book is still worth reading is that on many topics the judgements of the authors will often be regarded by current readers as correct. For example, on serious matters they repeatedly note the menace of Germany under the Nazis, the ineffectiveness of left-wing opposition in Britain and the blindness of the British Army to the threat. On more cheerful topics, they predict that the witty comedies of Noel Coward will last better than his other work and that Alfred Hitchcock will prove the most gifted native film director.
