Wrong Photo
[edit]The photo captioned "Miami skyline as used for Season 1 Title Card" shows the American Airlines Arena, which broke ground in 1998 and opened in 1999. If the show ran from 1985-1992, how is this correct? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.110.130.226 (talk) 21:02, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Bea Author/Betty White Animosity
[edit]I wonder if this page shouldn't mention the animosity between Bea Arthur and Betty White which has been well publicized? StoneProphet11 (talk) 21:26, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
- My thought is, this relationship is at least mentioned on the articles about the show characters I saw. This article as it looks now, seems to follow the structure used for similar TV shows with just a brief discussion of the overall show as the synopsis, with more details on the characters on their pages. Just my two cents Countryjudge (talk) 18:26, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Added information
[edit]I added two things to the article: →Added under format section that Bea Arthur actually hated cheesecake. →Added under casting section that Estelle Getty's suffered from stage fright. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sschlo1 (talk • contribs) 20:26, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
Critique
[edit]
Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position? I believe the article is neutral in terms of a fairly detailed summary of the show . There is a focus on characters and not plot lines of the show.
Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented? If one wanted to they could perhaps add more detail about the show by season instead of looking at such as a series. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vaish200 (talk • contribs) 19:17, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
No, this article is not neutral. It is strongly biased toward only showing positive representations of the show. Some aspects have aged well (as cited in the main bit at the top). Other aspects have not (and those aspects are missing).
I made edits to add nuance and accuracy to the article and they were deleted and replaced with a single minor edit. I resolved the edit conflict and added more nuance. This was reverted with a note claiming that there had been no edit conflict. I literally received an edit conflict notice and had to follow instructions to resolve it. Here is the history, for context:
curprev 05:29, 23 April 2026 Oklopfer talk contribs 130,086 bytes −1,045 no edit conflict, irrelevant plot and overlinking undo Tag: Undo curprev 05:05, 23 April 2026 ~2026-24801-96 talk 131,131 bytes +1,045 Resolved edit conflict. Added many wiki links to social commentary addressed (and sometimes perpetuated) in the show. undo Tags: Reverted Visual edit curprev 04:28, 23 April 2026 Oklopfer talk contribs 130,086 bytes −806 rv excessiveness, light vandalism, unsourced additions, and pure plot undo Tag: Undo (In my edits, I included multiple relevant specifically useful wikilinks to historical context.)
To answer the question of neutrality, here are some examples of items I included that indicate non-neutrality.
- I included an example of benevolent prejudice, a kind of racism that seems to keep getting deleted as plot, while the rest of the description of the episode (correctly favorable re ME/CFS and representation of medical sexism - something i dug up a relevant link for) was allowed to remain.
- I mentioned ableism - a central character theme for one of the characters, Rose, is that everyone is allowed to call her stupid. There are plenty of examples of physical ableism as well.
- I mentioned fatphobia (the relevant non-excessive wikilink i provided there went to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obesity_social_stigma_in_television). There are plenty of textbook examples throughout the series.
Here are some examples I did not get around to putting the time and energy into sourcing and citing:
- I did not mention ageism. Somehow ageism manages to be abundant in this show! Here, I'm taking a look at season 4 episode 1, and Sophia gets called a "wrinkled old crow". For example. There are more just within the episode. Sophia's character literally exists to make the other main characters look younger. This is ageism.
- I did not mention poor consent. For example, in season 4 episode 1, Rrose is literally 'hit over the head for being stupid', and the characters are all clear on this, and this is considered normal and acceptable. There are also casual mentions of non-consensual sexual experiences.
- Racism. This show was made in the 80s and has 1980s ideas about how to do antiracism.
- Blanche objectifies men. Throughout the show, Blanche's friends treat her relationship to men in two dimensions, throwing out fact and nuance.
- Classism.
- Et cetera.
Maybe there is some header that can go on the article? -~2026-16464-21 (talk) 02:04, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
- I don't know enough about this television show to make meaningful contributions to the topic. But provide sources which highlight these aspects of the topic instead of voicing your own opinions, or you will get complaints about original research. Otherwise, I have no objections to pointing out the rather reactionary aspects of television from the Reagan era. Dimadick (talk) 07:35, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
Names of Dorothy/Sophia and Blanche's relatives confirmed?
[edit]Can anyone identify the episodes in which the alleged names of Dorothy and Blanche's relatives are mentioned? Most notably, I've seen here and elsewhere Dorothy's sister referred to variously as Mayston or Harker and Blanche's sister Virginia given the married name of Wylde, and Sophia given the maiden name of Grisanti with no attribution to any episode of the show or "Word of God" confirmation from anyone connected with the show itself. If these names can't be substantiated by the show, they should probably be deleted. 2602:306:CE2D:9210:9CF9:B44C:F02A:B4EF (talk) 22:03, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
- I've seen every episode Lord knows how many times. And I don't recall any of those surnames. Could be that it didn't penetrate the same way the jokes do that I recall so well. But I say stick to first names unless they can be 100% verified, and when I say that, I am not referring to IMDb cast lists.--Cinemaniac86Dane_Cook_Hater_Extraordinaire 00:25, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
- It seems like they're just plain made up; these alleged names of Petrillo/Zbornak/Hollingsworth/Deveraux relatives litter this page and the character pages as well to a ridiculous degree. In the absence of any confirmation, they should go. 2602:306:CE2D:9210:9CF9:B44C:F02A:B4EF (talk) 18:36, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
- Agreed. Let's be honest: The only surnames we ever really hear throughout the show are the many Nylund/Lindstrom relatives and neighbors, haha. Gerkleknerbaagen(hoffstefenfrau) and so forth....As long as their first names are grouped together under the right Golden Girl, that'll suffice.--Cinemaniac86Dane_Cook_Hater_Extraordinaire 22:08, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

- I have no recollection of these names, including Grisanti, which an IP editor keeps restoring lately. Some of the television reruns are edited down to fit in more commercials, so perhaps it's possible that the maiden name Grisanti was mentioned in an episode before being cut out, but I'm doubtful as the name doesn't seem to be in any reliable sources. Anyone know for sure? AJFU (talk) 16:14, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
Thoughts on creating a separate page for a full list of main, recurring, and guest characters?
[edit]I think there are enough family members and friends of the main 4 that warrant there being a separate page. Instead of mentioning just those who are recurring, we can combine all the Petrillo/Zbornak relatives, the Hollingsworth/Deveraux family members, and the Nylund/Lindstrom people into their own respective sections. This way, we can briefly discuss the characterizations of characters such as Dorothy's brother Phil, whom we never see (like Maris on Frasier, Stan on Will & Grace, et al.) but is a character in his own right. This can also allow us to describe characters like Rose's mother, who made a single appearance; Blanche's father, who made 2 appearances featuring 2 different actors; and so forth. And then of course, exes like Stan, the most notable character outside of the core 4. Thoughts?--Cinemaniac86Dane_Cook_Hater_Extraordinaire 03:20, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

Adding Stan's Occupation
[edit]Hello. I'd like to propose adding Stanley's time as a novelty salesman as well as his success with his Zborny invention to his section under recurring character.

Orphaned references in The Golden Girls
[edit]I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of The Golden Girls's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Should a new section about the show's continuity issues be added?
[edit]
Hi all, I feel that the show had many continuity issues, as many comedies do, and want to add a section that would highlight the various continuity issues throughout the show's seven season run.Mr.MikeAnderson889 (talk) 16:46, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Merge Proposal
[edit]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- Consensus to merge all as set out. Additionally, I find the concern that the resulting article will be too long hard to square with the fact that the current articles should have plenty of overlap, being plot summaries. I have also set aside the TA !vote; see WP:OSE. Iseult Δx talk to me 05:32, 14 January 2026 (UTC)
I propose merging Sophia Petrillo Dorothy Zbornak, Rose Nylund and Blanche Devereaux into this article. Each character article is almost all plot and most of its references are the show's episodes. ~2025-34570-20 (talk) 02:57, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
- Support - even if they don't get merged, I really feel like they need to be rewritten. The navbox would also need to be modified. Also, I would be willing to help with the merge/do the merge if needed Snuggle 🖤 (they/them/it) (talk) 17:37, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
- Support per fairly blatant WP:PLOTONLY. They read more like fandom pages than an encyclopedia right now. ~ oklopfer (💬) 18:40, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
- Support - The same way I feel about most fictional character articles, any important plot summary could simply go into the main article and the episode lists. Even the behind the scenes stuff which is the bulk of Dorothy Zbornak can be merged into the respective Golden Girls and cast member articles. Wikipedia is not Fandom. At some point, it ends up being the same mess the Pokemon articles were in back when every species had their own article instead of being kept in 1-2 places. I don't think "What happens to one should happen to all" (Lone Ranger has its own article because there's been tons of Lone Ranger shows/movies), but in this case, The Golden Girls ended in the 1990's and (like most sitcoms) didn't become a longstanding franchise whose content doesn't have to be stretched. —Mythdon (talk • contribs) 18:53, 30 November 2025 (UTC)
- Strongly oppose While I agree it could use a bit of rewriting, but it 100% should not be deleted. The character is culturally well-known and arguably more famous than some real people with Wikipedia articles! ~2025-38412-15 (talk) 04:49, 6 December 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose; merging the most important content into this article would leave it too long. If some things get merged, they should be added to a separate list of Golden Girl characters to avoid cluttering the main article. – Closed Limelike Curves (talk) 03:17, 29 December 2025 (UTC)
- Support Doesn't need a standalone article. I could help with the merge as well. Simply no need for a standalone article. scope_creepTalk 17:54, 29 December 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose; Would make the article too long. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 18:15, 31 December 2025 (UTC)
Merge Reverted
[edit]Why did User:isaidnoway reverted the merge I made of the show's four main characters articles to this one? There was a discussion about merge proposal above with consensus that they should be merged here. I am no HTML/coding expert, so errors bound to be in the new article and I said in my edit summary that someone else was free to fix them. Should I let an expert or veteran editor perform the merge instead? It is better to just turn the four characters articles into redirects to here instead as I am honestly unsure what info they have is worth adding here, being mostly unsourced? ~2026-40292-6 (talk) 02:12, 20 January 2026 (UTC)

- I honestly don't see a consensus to merge in the outcome of the merger proposal (the !vote is close and one of the supports said "even if they don't get merged, I really feel like they need to be rewritten"). It looks more like a "no consensus" result. On top of that, these characters have certainly been covered in media enough that individual articles should make sense. If it's all right for Stranger Things, it should be all right for The Golden Girls. Probably needless to say, but I would support reassessing or repealing the decision. - The preceding argument I made absolutely works in tandem with the following statement. Reading comprehension oversights by fellow editors, or their argumentativeness over such, are not my problem. I honestly don't see a consensus to merge in the outcome of the merger proposal
If you believe the closer misjudged the consensus, the standard closure review venue for mergers is WP:AN. If the closure is not overturned and you take issue with how it was closed, the closer's judgement of consensus stands. I've restored the merger and provided attribution as requested by Isaidnoway. FaviFake (talk) 16:04, 11 February 2026 (UTC)
- Irrespective of the propriety of the merge discussion closure, it was closed in favor of a merge, not deletion, and the content from the articles should therefore be merged, not deleted. If there are concerns about sourcing, content should be tagged as needing citations. If there are concerns about length, a perfectly workable proposal was made in the merge discussion to have one separate article covering all characters. BD2412 T 20:41, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
