Major expansion (June 2026)

[edit]

I have substantially expanded this article from its previous short form, aiming at a comprehensive, fully inline-cited account. A summary of the main changes and the reasoning behind some editorial choices follows, in case it is useful to reviewers.

Scope and sources. The backbone of the History section is Pamela Hurle's school history The Elms in Colwall (2000), supplemented by primary and contemporary sources: records relating to the Worshipful Company of Grocers and the Walwyn bequest; Companies House and Charity Commission records for the school's status as a charitable company from 1965; Independent Schools Inspectorate reports; and contemporary newspaper coverage (1910s–2020s) for the headmaster succession, the 2022 merger episode, the school farm's show results and the women's-cricket connection. All statements are inline-cited.

Handling of uncertain claims. Several points where sources disagree, or where a tempting identification is unproven, are flagged in footnotes rather than resolved silently:

  • the foundation date (traditional 1614 against Hurle's note that the surviving plate's date was altered from 1649);
  • the county (the postal address is in Worcestershire, but the village and local authority are in Herefordshire);
  • G. Michael Singleton's accession as headmaster (1946 per the school history and the family's death notice; 1948 per obituaries);
  • the report that a 1912 Winchester scholar named "H. H. Price" was the philosopher H. H. Price, which is given only as a hedged footnote since biographers do not record his preparatory school;
  • the long-standing tradition that Edward Elgar taught at the school, which is presented explicitly as an undocumented local tradition, with his documented work as a peripatetic music teacher around Malvern given only as context in a note.

Other. The chairs-of-governors succession is sourced to Hurle, the company's annual accounts and inspection reports. Categories were updated to reflect the March 2026 CfD merge of the Herefordshire preparatory-schools category. Newspaper and obituary material has been paraphrased, with only short quotations.

Corrections and further sourcing are very welcome. TepidAccount (talk) 15:42, 15 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
