Film Quarterly published an article by J. M. Tyree (Stanford University) last year featuring a juicy comparison between Dexter and Batman that you might want to work into this article:

I can't access the article (... "An Error Occurred Setting Your User Cookie") but I can read the first page through the DOI link and couldn't see anything relevant to this episode.
